Well, I'm not sure what specific qualifications one would have to have to be in a current Top 20 coaches rankings list, but it's not like Spurrier is coaching at a place that is a historically strong football power. Hell, they've never even been to Atlanta for the SEC title game. And going up against UGA, UT and UF every year, he or anyone else who coaches there will seldom be a favorite to win the SEC East, much less the SEC title.
I understand all this, and I guess it's hard to draw an arbitrary line as to what is considered current. To me, if you put Spurrier in, then you have to start considering JoPa and Bobby Bowden who have the best resumes, but currently aren't doing much of anything. And I don't have Miles or Meyer in my top 5 because their resume is not long enough yet. The only right answer to this is that Carroll, Stoops, and Tressel have the best resumes of the last 8-10 years. With Brown probably right behind. But Saban, Miles, or Meyer could shoot up the list with another NC. Think of how long it took Bowden and Tom Osborn to get their 2nds.

I agree to an extent but they are still at places they have experienced high rates of success for most of their career(and places you can still experience high rates of success). Spurrier isn't still at UF. If he was and he was yielding 6-6 seasons, I'd agree with you more.

Tressel is definitely top 5.
I'd also put Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Mark Richt and Les Miles on that list.

Bowden and Tom Osborne, 2 of the greatest ever, were pretty old when they won their 2nd NCs. I'm not sure how old JoPa was when he won his 2nd. If Saban, Miles, Meyer, Stoops, Carroll, any of those guys win another soon, they would be ahead of the pace. 2 seems to be the standard for greatness(other than longevity, of course)

OK!! But he needs to get over the top!! I would not put a coach in my top 5 without a NC!!!

Me neither, but he's in the top 10, probably. And it's only a matter of time before he wins a NC. You keep knocking on the door, eventually somebody's gonna let you in.

Well, Bowden was about 62-63 years old when he won his first one and about 69 years old when he won his second.
Osborne was about 57 when he won his 1st, and 58 when he won his second.
I'd say Joe Pa was about 55 when he won his 1st and about 59 when he won his 2nd.
But, I was under the impression you were making a different point.

Well we all know Bowden is 80 years old and made a mistake hiring Fredo but nonetheless his all time winning percentage is 77.2% and higher than Spurrier's 74% and he is 8-5-1 against Spurrier and that is over much more games than Spurrier has ever coached.
He also has 2 national championships to Spurrier's one.
Even with the last two 7-6 seasons FSU under Bowden is still the second most winning football team trailing Michigan.
It is still early on Saban also as he can't seem to beat FSU's new head coach in waiting!

DickRod's a joke. You are a joke of a coach if you can't have your team beat a four TD underdog at home in a game that would send you to the NCG.
Same could be said for Carroll, then. Except beating Stanford wouldn't have sent them to the NC game for another couple months. Oh, and Stanford was almost a 6 TD underdog.

Give him what PC had and the Trojans have at least one more NC Title.
really, did you notice how much talent he had at UF and only one NC? Hell, If the system that is in place now was in place in 96 SOS would not have a National Title at all.

Mudda phucka beat Kentucky 44-16 last year AND Arkansas.
So. Car beat UK 38-23 in 2007, and LOST to Ark 48-36 in regulation. They also lost to Vanderbilt.

His all-time record is great, he is one of the top 5 coaches of the last 20 years, he is not a top 5 coach in 2007 or 2008.

I am not sold on Tressell. He got spanked By Ill at home last year!! And he can't beat the Top Dogs!
PJ, stick with 70's NFL, you actually know something about that.
Ill beat tOSU by 7, losing by a TD is not getting spanked.
As for the Big dogs, he lost the last 2 BCS CG to better teams, his overall bowl record is great. He beat Texas on the Road in 2006 when UT was ranked #2 and Miami to win the BCS CG in 2002. Dude is a great coach, accept it.
quote:
IF he wants to compete aginst the big dogs he MUST recruit TEAM SPEED!! He has failed to do that with examples of the last two nc games!!!
This is the most overblown BS ever. The "team Speed" of Florida boiled down their DE's, that's it, Their DE's were too quick for tOSU's OT's. Vernon Ghloston was pretty fast for his position and look how many CB's tOSU has in he NFL. CB is maybe the most athletic position in the NFL.

Houston Nutt (yes) and B. Petrino. I would take any of the 6 to start my program.

I would rank Rich R. over Carroll and Tressel also.

In no order
Miles
Carroll
Stoops (He is almost out of my top 5)
Tubberville
Saban (Bama will be tough from this point forward, until he leaves anyway)
