Not really.
BUT…
He cleaned up his own mistakes a few times with some clutch plays.
And he was more of a playmaker than I think the “game manager” label gives him credit for.

Different times my friend
It was before saban went spread
He was quite effective until jimbo called a qb run up big against Florida

One of the most electric, gutsy performances ever by an LSU player was Mauck coming in for the 2001 SECCG after Tennessee purposefully injured Rohan Davey.
In essence, Matt Mauck birthed “Junior and LuLu,” one of the first sports memes that ever existed.
If you’ve no idea what/who I’m talking about, then you need to get off our lawns.

Yeah he damn near cost us that Ole Miss game and he threw a lot of picks in 2003 - folks liked to call him a "game manager" but I don't call a QB that throws 14 pics a "game manager". that's how many he threw in 2003.
But that 2003 defense was the best I've ever seen at LSU, I'll argue with the 2011 guys on that all day - and he did make up for the pics against Ole Miss (cause there were 3 that night) by hitting a huge TD pass to Devrey Henderson late.
But make no mistake the defense bailed his arse out big time more than once that year.

I agree, LSU was lucky to get the win in Oxford that day but teams need luck to win a national title.

Started #18 tradition. All hail Mauck

Craig Nall
If you're going Craig Nall, don't forget Casey Tabor. The latter only threw one pass as a Tiger-- vs A&M near the end of an 18-13 home loss to the Aggies. Tabor's pass was a thing of beauty-- a 45-yard strike delivered perfectly to the receiver at the 5 yard line, resulting in what should have been a score. But, as expected in the era of Camp Curley, the receiver proceeded to drop the football as it entered his grasp. Therefore LSU loses the game and Tabor completes his assignment as Tiger QB 0-1 for 0 yards and a QBR of 0.

Mauck was a perfect game manager. Didn’t throw the game away and made the plays needed each game to win.
At that time he felt all world and was a breath of fresh air. After the last couple years of QB play that we have seen it is easy to get caught up in that.
We have seen two of the best seasons ever for a college qb and we shouldn’t take that for granted.
I also won’t take Mauck and Flynn for granted either. Different built teams that didn’t need to throw the ball all over

He wasn’t frustrating to watch because he was a lot better than what we were used to and our defense and running game were excellent. He delivered when he needed to

UGA twice
auburn
bama
arky
ole miss and eli manning
GTFO
whole team was shite against UF. were not ready and jimbo game plan sucked. was not his best in the natty but OU had a great defense.
Don't forget the 2001 SEC Championship game against #2 Tennessee who had previously beaten LSU that season with Rohan Davey under center. Mauck came in during the SEC Championship, ran all over Tennessee and won LSU its first SEC Championship since 1986 (16 years). That LSU win with Mauck as the SEC Championship MVP knocked Tennessee out of what would have been their second BCS National Championship game in 3 years.
It was a huge performance by a freshman Mauck.

Our defense was dominant - that game and all year. We were better than Ole Miss and eventually won because of that - not easy to overcome 3 turnovers and a pick 6 but our D just didn't give them much.

Ah yes, the good ole “I can’t defeat him in this argument, so I’ll just call him names and insults instead” tactic.

This is what you get with that level of poster.
Mauck was pretty mid in 2003. Was terrible in several big games. This is why you see the illogical use of team stats to defend him.
At that point LSU had a very weak history at QB for several decades, so Mauck seemed awesome.

Except, he wasn't anything close to "perfect" in that role. He threw a lot of picks in big games, which game managers aren't supposed to do.

Exactly. Glad you agree
Honestly, the 2003 and 2011 teams are practically carbon copies of each other except Matt Mauck was a little better then Jarret Lee and Jordan Jefferson.
