Bregman was a catcher in HS. As for why he is so competent at SS, I think it's simply that he's a natural baseball player. Born to play the game.

What is the story on Bregman's high school position? Was he a catcher? 2nd baseman?

He played short early and was then going to catch in order to help his draft stock. He played 2nd for Team USA.

I had to go back, and you are probably right. He does have a better chance. I like the fact that they both play for LSU!!!!

So he grew up an infielder, but tried catching to please the scouts?

He has just been so solid as a freshman shortstop, very unexpected.

How did he turn into a good shortstop after not really playing the position in high school?

It's very impressive that he plays it so well, not having played it in HS. He's a hell of an Athlete.

He was never a full time catcher but was going to try it. There were some questions about whether he could stick on the middle infield, and had he proven to be a catcher his bat would have been even more valuable.

The questions about his position helped us as much as the broken finger. If scouts knew he could be a serviceable catcher he probably never would have slipped, even with the injury.

I also think Bregman is just one of the few really good baseball players. He could probably play multiple positions and still be a decent fielder.

We need to enjoy him, not many guys like him.

In a few years, I have a feeling we will be trying to compare future players to him.
