This game against Vandy will give us another clue as to the direction of our defense. I am not worried about the offense, although at some point, Miles needs to unleash the offense. Hopefully it is Saturday.

I like the potential to create big plays/turnovers on defense..it's just the inconsistency that worries me. way way way too many big plays given up on the regular.

"Third and Chavis" was certainly one of the aspects of John Chavis' defenses that VOLS warned us of. Most level headed seeming VOLS also indicated that his defenses consistently improved as the year progressed. I hope this is accurate and continues. I will look for improvement on defense, not only this week but throughout the year.

Bingo. Our D Line needs to get slimmer and quicker. Without a push up the middle and containment on the edge, the D is in for a long year.

Great post as usual Dubois. Keep doin' what you doing 'cause you make us some of the most educated football fans in the world.... I really do believe that. Seriously, I do believe that most LSU fans who read your column get educated very quickly.

Carl, I really appreciate you writing for the Rant. Being in Atlanta I often don't get the local flair for LSU as I just read the national columns. Really enjoying reading your stuff first with the baseball team and now thankfully football

True, but he only gave one side to the argument below. Having an offense that poor, leaves your defense out there most of the time and many times in poor field position. That being said, these things probably cancel out, and the stats posted by Chavis are very good, no matter what.

_________________________________________________-
"I will say this," Danielson said, "he (Chavis) will not approach his stats last year from Tennessee. No way. No offense to Coach (Fulmer), but people who played Tennessee last year knew they didn't have to score a lot of points. They played it close to the vest, and the game was slowed down. The teams that play LSU know they're going to have to score points, and it'll be a much more open game, and he will not approach those stats."

Fulmer agreed.

"Yeah, that's a great point," he said.

The numbers support the argument with extreme prejudice. Tennessee ranked No. 111 out of 119 teams in the nation last year in scoring offense, averaging 17.33 points per game. The national leader, Oklahoma, averaged 51.14 points per game.

Some observations and perceptions about Chavis' defenses:

3rd and Chavis (this is more in the latter years of his UT career)
Tackling seemed to be non existent. Defensive players would hit rather than wrap up and tackle.
Making unheralded QB's and WR's look like world beaters when they played the Vols.

Usually UT always had a strong run defense while the pass defense left a lot to be desired.

Looking forward to the Vandy game tomorrow to see how his D does against a better team.

Preparation is one thing that I think has been underscored a little in our 1st game against UW. With their new coaching staff, really what could we gameplan for? We kind of had to take the field and see what they threw at us and then react to it. I feel this is a big reason we looked much better in the second half. UW on the other hand didn't have that 20 hour limitation on practice and pretty much knew what they were getting with our offense I think. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but I do feel it made a difference. We will get a better feel for what we will look like tonight against Vandy.

I agree with you 100% when you do not know what the other team is going to do then how can you properly prepare them ? You can not, you have to read and react and LSU being in a totaly different defensive scheme than they rean before that made it more diffecult. So I believe that LSU will be better prepared this week over last week because they have film to see how they will run their offense. LSU will win by 20+ without a whole lot of trouble if they do not turn the ball over by fumbling it away. Jefferson does not make to many mistakes and takes care of ball realy well. Because of the weather LSU is going to have to take care of the ball. It is going to be slow going but still I believe they win by 20+.

LSU 42 Vandy 14!

Great Post however I have lived in the Knoxville area for 12 years and I now see the Vols defense but they are wearing purple and gold and I hateit with a passion. It has always been that third down that has been the Achilles’ heel of a fine defense. Many Vol fans will tell you they would rather a 3rd and 2 rather then 3rd and 9. I will set back and watch and see if our defense comes up to what we TIGER fans have come to expect a hard strong defense.

Great read! Like Coach Fulmer said, third and long could be a compliment if you are constantly putting you opponent in that situation. It depends, if your cup is half empty or half full.
