My nephew took a ball to the neck as a catcher in a high school game a week or so ago. Passed out on the way to the hospital. They said it was his body overreacting to pain/stress (vasovagal syncope or vagal response). Gave him an IV, ran some tests and he was fine.

That’s good to hear.
Clarification: it is good to hear your nephew was fine.

There are generally 2 ambulances there for every game...one in Left and one in Right. I know the one in left took a fan out on a stretcher prior to the incident with Mac. I would assume that the one in right might have transported him to the hospital since he did leave the stadium and go there. It was a very scary situation...when you thought all was well and he went to stand up and just passed out, I think there was a collective gasp in the crowd.

Definitely one of those moments that make the perceived importance of the game take a back seat..

In the 7th inning, Bama catcher Mac Guscette had a wild pitch bounce up and hit him in the throat. He apparently had trouble breathing and passed out at one point. He was carried off the field and taken to a BR hospital.

Would hope bama gets the catchers' mask with the neck guard. Surprised, thought they were standard, required masks.

same thought here - It looks like the design of that face guard leaves a lot to be desired. The chin protection bends outward - it looks like it leaved the route to the throat completely unprotected from an upward traveling ball.

Hopefully Guscette gets the same good report and is back to himself soon.

I was thinking after it happened that this was probably the case, because I've experienced this before. I didn't get hit in the neck, but about 15 years ago my friends and I were horsing around, racing each other at night through some not very well lit streets on the way back to our cars after a festival. I tripped over something at full speed, and ended up skidding through rocks and glass on the side of the road; sprained my wrist, cut my arm, my side, my knees, and broke my toe over whatever it was I tripped on. I sat up for a while, trying to gather myself, and suddenly just blacked out.

After I woke up we started walking back, and I could feel myself going out again, so they had to help me back. They were all thinking I had a concussion, but I never hit my head. I later was told that this was just my body trying to keep me from going into shock over all the pain. It was weird, because I'd had some pretty painful injuries before, and never blacked out. I'm not sure what causes this to happen to people at certain times, but not others that would seem to be similar.
