Tulane made two bad decisions. leaving the SEC and tearing down Tulane Stadium. if they were in the SEC now attendance would never be an issue.

Having been around during the years of the 'rivalry' I just don't think those days will ever be re-captured. I would agree with the two main issues pointed out- The loss of Tulane Stadium & Tulane's de-emphasis on sports. For the young people on the rant, Tulane stadium was simply outstanding...one of the finest stadiums anywhere. This was an all steel stadium- it was great when folks would shuffle their feet and cause a rumbling sound. With the Superdome, I can understand the problem for Tulane students having to travel to an off campus site. Tad Gormley? Come on, that is a high school stadium. Tulane has really fallen on hard (harder?) times & that is sad..

Easy, Easy - I was giving you props. I think it says loads about LSU to raise the ACT requirement. Isn't it somewhere around 26 or something ? That is huge. But unfortunately still not on par with TU, so don't pretend to be in the same league as our academics. Just like we don't pretend to be in the same league with LSU atheletically. (although our baseball kicks arse, too)

was tulane stadium in bad repair when it closed??

If I recall correctly, I think there was an issue about 'repairs' needed, but I don't think it was anything to bankrupt the university. It could have been done. Folks forget the Saints played there, and even a couple of Super Bowls were played there as well.

I think it had more to do with a big push by the state to get them into playing in the superdome, to help further justify its expense.

And that was a BIG mistake. I remember the arguments even about the dome- they paid extra $$ to buy up the property to put it in downtown N.O., when they could have put it in Jefferson Parish for next to nothing...

I didn't claim LSU was on par with Tulane academically. I said not to discount the academic strides LSU has made- including having nationally-ranked programs in several departments despite our horrific state funding. It was you (or one of your Tulane brethern) with the "I'm better than you because I went to Tulane" attitude when the truth is that MANY people who were accepted to both schools chose LSU.
Face it- Tulane is 70% out-of-state students, most of whom leave New Orleans once they graduate- how is that helping our state or cultivating a fan base? Tulane has no fan support because people view the school as a Northeasterners-who-couldn't-get-into-the-Ivy-League second choice school with absolutely no ties to N.O. or our state.

In retrospect, though, it was a brilliant move.
At the time the dome was built, the national trend was the suburban type stadium.
Moving Tulane in there, though, not so good for them. However, it's sort of hard to argue things would be different for them, otherwise.

"Atheletically"? You're right--Tulane's academics are not the same as LSU's.

wish i was old enough when this rivalry meant something. it would have been cool to be able to take the streetcar to campus get off tailgate. going to the dome for the tulane game last year had zero college atmosphere. tulane really needs that. they got off their asses and built a new baseball stadium. they need to do the same for football.

There was nothing wrong with Tulane stadium other than the timing. It seemed like a good idea to move but it hadnt been tested. Granted, there wasnt much parking along Audobon and coming down 90 isnt the easiest but it was a great place. Was there for the 73 Sugar, maybe a few years before they tore it down but the move at the time was domes, multi-puropse, sky-boxed palaces, which the superdome was. Tulane didnt know at the time an off campus shared stadium kills recruiting and students hate it. Look at Pitt, Minnesota, Houston and soon to be Miami Hurricanes (they only shared the OB with the Dolphins for 4 years of the 80's run and the OB is actually in Coral Gables. DS is way up in Ft. Lauderdale). All those teams were national powers at one time and have slowly eroded. If TU had it to do over they still be in Tu S. Maybe not 85,000 seats but still the same site.

Yep. Much like the wearing of Quiana shirts, at that time the "groovy" thing to do was play in a domed stadium.
When I see those old pics of Tulane Stadium, it is sad to think of what could have been had Tulane not torn that old gem of a place down.

keep believing that
and FWIW, if you weren't accepted with substantial scholarship money then you barely got in. pretty much everyone at TU has large scholarships

Hell I even had the privilage to perform in Tulane Stadium at a Saint 49's game. While on the sideline waiting to go on I got to talk with Billy Kilmer sp. AWSOME!!! memory.
And yes all the fights were real and not made up by us old drunks!! What a bunch of aholes out there these days called kids. I guess that's what happens when you can't spank a kid when he needs it. hahahahahahhahahahahhaha

I partcularly remember the 82 game that Tulane won 31-28 with Mike McKay, Reggie Reginelli and "Vegas" Vince Gibson. The Tigers had accepted an Orange Bowl bid and fans brought oranges to the game. I believe Tulane was 208 coming in to the game. After TU scored the go ahead late TD late in the 4th, the fans were pissed and threw oranges on the field . I remember TU players taking bites out of them. That Tiger loss came out of nowhere. Other than the 84 game, Tiger wins were less memorable, I guess b/c LSU won so often.

Well, the 87 game was a great one and went to the very end.

I never understood Pitt tearing down their place.
They had a neat old on campus stadium, and a pretty decent cache of legitimate football tradition.

That was just stupid. It's not like it was that long ago that Pitt won a national championship. Back in the same era that Ugaly won their MNC.
Great old stadium with lots of history now gone and they now play in an NFL stadium.
