No, I'm old enough to recall it still being at least some semblence of a "rivalry," but it was never really that legitimate as far as on a national scale.

Look at the matchups from about the 50s onward. LSU owned Tulane (who was last legitimately competitive in about the '30s). That does not make for a top 10 rivlary, no matter how you slice it, I'm sorry.

a few claim it was only Tulane who wanted to beat the hell out of LSU. While it would make their season, back then, LSU wanted the game just as badly.

They won their last SEC title (maybe their only one) in 1949. The Tigers still beat them that year.

I think they actually went to the Rose Bowl some time in the 30s. That was when I was dating it from, but I'll concede up to '49.

very under rated rivalry through 1994. Since it was only played twice from 1995 to 2005,its dissolved almost entirely.

My SR class was 2-2 vs Tulane. Freshman year should have been 'winner plays in Hall of Fame Bowl' even with selections being done real early in those days. We won 24-7 and got left out of a bowl in a game played in a monsoon.Tulane took a 7-4 record to the bowl vs a 6-5 Arkansas team. Word I heard was LSU had screwed the HOF bowl around the year before in '79.

1981: 48-7 1982 was one of the biggest upsets in college football. LSU had talked big all week, including Jerry Stovall when asked would he run the score up on Tulane ? "Did they run it up on us last year ?",was his response.

20-7 win in 1983 was Stovall's last game as coach.

The 1972 game was one of the most dramatic in the series. Not sure why,but LSU and Tulane played two years in a row in New Orleans in '72 and '73. LSU was 8-1-1 and Tulane was 6-4 playing a very, very rugged schedule that included Michigan,Boston College, West Virginia,Georgia and Georgia Tech.LSU made a stop at the one yard line as time expired to hang on to a 9-3 win.

23-18-5 record against tulane after 1948. tulane went into a different direction as a athletic program in the 50's and have never recovered. i have to give it to vanderbilt they stuck it out.

They did. TU also actually played in and won the first SUgar Bowl, I believe. 3-2 win over Temple.

I think when Tulane left the SEC that also had a big effect on the rivalry. I think we roll big this weekend and hope they hang about 60 points on the them.

Seriously ?? You're kidding, right ? A person going to Tulane would no doubt have a chance to attend LSU as well. The reverse is not true. Therefore, going to Tulane is a choice. If we wanted to "be" you, we would've gone there. Probably with a full ride.

With LSU's current entrance requirements, and Tulane's current desire to recruit students from La., I'd argue this is not really true.

Not as football players, which is what's relevant to a sports rivalry. And here I thought you guys were smart over in Uptown.

That's true - props to LSU for that. Just got a little heated about the constant label of "wannabes"

We are planning on having a great tailgate on Sat. Most of us will be wearing green and most of the spouses wearing purple. FYI this is the only game that I don't wear purple.

Wave for LSU, you can beat your chest all you want about your academics- Tulane is a fine school. But don't minimize the advances LSU has made in academia in recent years. I (like as well as many of my friends) was accepted to Tulane but chose LSU because I wanted great academic programs (landscape architecture- #1 ranked program in the US) AND strong athletics. Can you say that?

Indeed. That is why an on campus staium would help tremendously.

Similar to Tulane, Minnesota suffered mightily when they moved to the Humphrey Dome. The Gophers have recognized their mistake and are building an on-campus facility. Look for them to climb back into football relevance.

it probably is true. tulane's admissions skyrocketed this past year. difficulty of admission is now on par with the top 25 or so schools in the country

I was accepted to both Tulane and LSU as well. I went to LSU because I could afford it! Not to mention the environment in the Honors College is comparable to Tulane anyway.

However, I'd give a few bones towards the building of new, slightly smaller Tulane Stadium in uptown. Would at least make the Tulane games in NO much nicer.

Is there anywhere on campus to put a stadium? I haven't been back to Tulane since my senior year of high school.

Dorms and a rec center. There's a plaque there in a little field that remains, though, commemerating Tulane Stadium, and the dorms are called Stadium Place.

Sad.

The LSU/Tulane game was one of the biggest rivalry games in the South. But much like the Penn State Pittsburgh rivalry, it is a thing of the past.
