One oddity that I found in my brief research on this topic - LSU played OM at home in 1953, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59, 61, 62, 63 and 64. That's 10 out of 12 years (57 and 60 being played @ Ole Miss). I didn't go back further.
From a purely historical perspective: Most of Mississippi was "dry" counties in the 1950s and 1960s, with the exceptions of "tourist" areas (ie: the Coast and specially designated areas in the other "dry" counties). With a lot of this persisting even in present day. You still have to exercise caution when drinking and preparing adult beverages at an Oxford tailgate in the present day.
Also, when it changed to a more rotating schedule most of the Ole Miss home games in the series were held in Jackson, MS and not Oxford (all through the 1960s, 70s and into the 1980s).

At that time, the Ole Miss stadium was not big, so LSU and Ole Miss agreed to play most games in Tiger Stadium and split the ticket sales 50-50. Ole Miss coach Johnny Vaught said he didn't mind playing so often in Tiger Stadium because he said the Rebels could beat the Tigers wherever they played.

I don’t think this was that uncommon back in the day. From what I was told, many schools on the schedule had small stadiums and didn’t draw large numbers of fans, even for larger schools. They made more $ from the visitors cut for a game at LSU than they made hosting the games so they agreed to play at LSU .
IIRC there was a similar arrangement with FSU during the late 70’s - early 80’s

Texas A&M and Ole Miss played a number of games in TS and not home-and-home in the 50s and 60s. Our stadium was 68K and Oxford was 33K and Collie Station was 46K. The OM series converted to BR and Jackson when Miss Memorial Stadium at 46K was built. (Later it became 65K.)

I can still hear the sound of Tom Tupa punting the ball. Never heard it before or after, incredibly loud. For the youngsters, he was the punter as well, but I can't find any images of him punting.

quote:kind of shocked how historic this matchup is. Guess the Rebels have been arse for a really long time. First time in over 60 years these teams are both ranked in the top 10 for a LSU home game?!
LSU and Ole Miss meet as Top 10 teams for the first time since 1962 when the No. 6 Rebels beat the No. 4 Tigers, 15-7, in Tiger Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark the 19th Top 10 matchup in Tiger Stadium history with LSU holding a 12-6 mark in those games.
Only the 19th top 10 matchup in history at TS?!
That’s wild. Pumped to be at the game tomorrow. OP didnt provide a link. Whats the source of this quote? That’s hard to believe this will only be the 19th time. Felt like I attended several top 10 matchups just while I was at school between the Miles and Orgeron days.
