LSU and Ole Miss meet as Top 10 teams for the first time since 1962 when the No. 6 Rebels beat the No. 4 Tigers, 15-7, in Tiger Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark the 19th Top 10 matchup in Tiger Stadium history with LSU holding a 12-6 mark in those games. Saturday’s game marks the celebration of 100 years of Tiger Stadium.

Here’s your Friday trivia question… First one to answer gets free TigerDroppings premium membership for a year…
Out of those 18 previous Top10 matchups in Tiger Stadium history, how many of the 18 games were night games?

(I actually don’t know the answer here, someone here will probably know though, hopefully)

All 18 of them. Crazy they had 18 top 10 matchups prior to 1963 and none from 1963 till now.

Here are Top 10 matchups in Tiger Stadium, from what I can gather:

2019 Florida - night game
2019 Auburn - day game
2018 Bama - night game
2015 Florida - night game
2012 South Carolina - night game
2012 Bama - night game
2011 Arkansas - day game
2009 Florida - night game
2007 Va Tech - night game
2007 Florida - night game
2005 Tennessee - night game
1987 Ohio State - day game
1973 Alabama - night game
1972 Auburn- night game
1962 Ole Miss- night game
1961 Ole Miss- night game
1959 TCU- night game
1959 Ole Miss- night game
1958 Ole Miss- night game

Assuming everything in the 50's-70's were night games. I'm going to guess that all but three have been night games. (Thanks for those who have shared about the 1987 OSU game)

Misread your post - I agree, it is crazy but then you have to consider that Ole Miss and LSU have both had long periods of irrelevancy (Ole Miss' being a lot longer...).

I thought it was crazy that LSU played against Ohio State in 1987 and then didn't have another Top 10 vs Top 10 matchup in Tiger Stadium until that hurricane night against Tennessee in 2005.

And I misread the OP too. Thought it was saying this is the 19th Top 10 matchup between LSU-Ole Miss. But this is the 19th Top 10 matchup overall in TS history.

LSU was #11 when playing UGA in 2003 (at least according to sports-reference.com)

OSU 87 game was a day game. I sat on the East side and nearly died of heat stroke

I was going by memory and looked it up after I posted. My mistake.
LSU was ranked 11 going into the 2003 UGA game.

all depends on which poll we want to use.

If we use the coaches poll we have a top 10 matchup at TS tomorrow night. #8 OM @ #10 LSU

But if you use the ap poll it’s #9 OM @ #13 LSU so not a top 10 matchup

ETA: I forgot about the '11 Arky game but thought the '69 game vs Auburn might have been one instead.

There have been great matchups of top 10 teams in TS, so I'll relate one of my favorites - maybe not the best, but one I enjoyed:

November 4, 1961,

#6 LSU hosting the unbeaten #2 Rebels (Ole Miss was ranked #2, but #1 Michigan State had already lost earlier in the afternoon, so Ole Miss had to be considered the presumptive heir to that position if they beat the underdog Tigers in BR.)

Here is the write up of the game in that year's Gumbo. One interesting statistic is that the Tigers had only one pass completion in that game - it was a fourth down and kept a scoring drive alive.

One oddity that I found in my brief research on this topic - LSU played OM at home in 1953, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59, 61, 62, 63 and 64. That's 10 out of 12 years (57 and 60 being played @ Ole Miss). I didn't go back further.

It wasn't until 65 that it seemingly started rotating on an annual basis.

Anyone have historical knowledge of why this was the case?

I agree, and sports-reference seems to be using the AP poll for the info I pulled.
