Didn't he say tonight that any player that wanted to come back could? I'm thinking He and Watkins had a talk and Watkins was told he wouldn't get much playing time next year, and BOTH agreed the best thing would be if he moved on. Thats what I'm getting.

Dude, just go away, you're not fooling anyone, 4 posts, all on this issue? come on, LOL

The quote in Tiger Rag says any returning player would be welcomed back for Fall ball. I think the emphasis is on Fall ball. Several will probably be told they can either transfer now or compete for a roster spot in the Fall, but it will not be guaranteed.

Recruiting talent isn't Mainieri's problem. The MLB Draft is.
The guy has consistently signed top players then loses a handful to the Draft. It should be called the Turtle Thomas Delimma because that's pretty much the same battle Smoke faced and just about every other top tier program. It's not just LSU but we do seem to continue to fall in the same trap. The question is do you still count on their commitments....in a few cases Mainieri has and we've been burnt.

Watkins position with the team will be re-evaluated after the draft according to the article in the Advocate with direct quotes from CPM.
I hate it if a SR. gets cut. I really do. But he hasn't been the same since his injury. He looks like he packed on weight. And having season tickets in the outfield, I watched him a lot. He seem to play scared. Last year, he was diving without worrying and such. This year, he was slow to try to dive for things. I notice right before a nice catch he made that he wasn't even paying attention. He was slow to get to the ball and had to dive because he was looking at the other team's pitcher warming up.

very unethical move by Mainieri - proves what kind of guy he is
Nothing unethical whatsoever. It is called managing your program.

moneyg Maineiri isn't a great recruiter or talent evaluator. If he was we would not have this problem with lack of talent. I will give him a pass on the freshman pitchers. Also he did make a mistake on JT Wise. Just cause Maineiri cuts a player doesn't mean they can't be a success at another school. Maineiri has his work cut out for him. He has missed a lot on players in the last few years.
I haven't commented on any of that.
The point I'm making is that Mainieri deciding to move on from Watkins is not out of line, nor is it uncommon in college baseball.
If you want to make a different point that the decision itself is just a bad one, go ahead. I think you'd be wrong on Watkins (I have been wrong up until this point) but that's just my opinion.

why is this bothering people so much ? trey watkins isn't that good and never really has been ... before he got hurt last season, he was getting HORRIBLE jumps on the ball off the bat in LF .. he was swinging for the fences -- ala leon landry in early 2009 -- as a lead off hitter because he got a taste of the long ball ... this season he was hitting in the low .200s as a freaking lead off hitter and was still nothing spectacular in the outfield ... he can't consistently put the ball in play in the clutch with RISP ... you can blame sanchez all you want, but there is point where it is also the player's responsibility to improve as well ... LSU has insane baseball facilities and resources ... trey watkins wasn't getting any better, he was going backwards ... you can get much much better offensive production out of his spot from someone else ..

Have these people forgotten the Georgia game this year when Watkins made TWO errors in left field one of which TW lost the game for us when he dropped a routine fly ball by trying to "hot dog" it by making a basket catch and the ball hit him in the stomach? Mainieri pulled him out of the game between innings after that error.
That out would have ended the inning but then the next batter drove in the eventual winning runs. Alsup gave up 3 runs that game (final score Ga. 3, LSU 2) but all of Georgia's runs were unearned with two of those unearned runs scoring after Watkins flubbed catch.
We possibly would have taken 2 out 3 from Georgia if not for that error. An argument could be made that error on Watkins was the loss which kept us out of the SEC tournament.
Only freshman Ty Ross had a lower slugging percentage and on-base percentage than Watkins among the starters.
People forget we signed Watkins at the last minute out of LSU-E only after the draft that year took who we thought was going to be one of our outfield starters.

This has nothing to do with LSU/Watkins, but apparently Forrest Moore (former PBS pitcher) is suing MSU, because he injured his arm and thinks it is Cohen/MSUs fault. Anyways, thought this quote from the article is related to this thread.
Moore Article
quote:
The plausability of a head coach conspiring with trainers and the associate athletic director to force a player off the team is very thin. Why would Cohen do this? Why not just cut him? Wouldn't it be easier for Cohen to say that Moore simply wasn't good enough to play for MSU? Scholarships get pulled all the time for poor performance

People wanted Watkins cut months ago. Said how horrible he was in every game thread. I believe the term "automatic out" was used alot. Now CPM cuts him and CPM is the idiot. Make up your minds morons

i don't get it, dude .. he just IS NOT a good college baseball player and is just absorbing a good roster spot ... and there are obviously things going on behind the scenes that we don't notice like going to class, work ethic issues, a growing midsection, etc. .. not saying any of these are specific to trey .. but they are things the casual fan is just not privy to ... and thanks for reminding me about his willie mays shite at georgia ..
