Good teams with Stanford's admissions...Must be a pretty good coach.
Stanford had been to the NCAA tourney 9 straight years when he was hired, winning a game each year and making it to the Sweet 16 three times, the Elite 8 twice, and the Final 4 once during that stretch.
It isnt like he took over a shitty program

I bet he's happy, now he can recruit all the street ballers from the hoods in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Jackson, Houston, Dallas, etc to go to LSU. I mean we all know they wouldn't be able to get into Stanford to play.

he got stanford to be successful with their limitations
Seems like he took over a damn good program, it's not like he built them from the ground up.
What the previous Stanford coach did before he got there:
1999: Final Four
1999: 25-7 (15-2), 2nd rd NCAA
2000: 26-4 (15-3), 2nd rd NCAA
2001: 31-3 (28-2), Elite 8 NCAA
2002: 20-10 (12-6), 2nd rd NCAA
2003: 24-9 (14-4), 2nd rd NCAA
2004: 30-2 (17-1), 2nd rd NCAA
What he has done:
2005: 18-13 (11-7), NCAA
2006: 16-14 (11-7), NIT
2007: 18-13 (10-8), NCAA
2008: 28-8 (13-5), Sweet 16

and we all know that admission standards for basketball players are the same as regular students. William Avery probably would have gone on to become a Duke educated chemist had he not been able to play off guard.

A comment breakdown of TJ's Stanford career:
LINK
quote:
** His first team had an unexpected hole created when Josh Childress left early. It got much bigger when Dan Grunfeld went down with a season-ending injury. I thought Johnson did a good job getting that team to the NCAA tournament.
** His second team was also hobbled by injuries, plus a recruiting gap created by the coaching changeover. Grunfeld was not nearly the player he had been before his injury, and Matt Haryasz suffered an eye injury midway through the conference season that significantly lowered the level of his play. Anthony Goods and Lawrence Hill, the top of Johnson’s recruiting class, were talented but not superstars who could make an immediate impact.
** His third team was picked to finish at or near the bottom of the conference. I have frequently needled Jon Wilner for a blog item he wrote early that season after a blowout loss to Air Force in which he said we were going to see a lot more lopsided losses. Instead, Hill and Goods improved rapidly, Brook Lopez (who missed the whole non-conference season) added the first real low-post presence to the team in years, and Stanford upset USC and UCLA on the way to an NCAA tournament berth that NOBODY had anticipated before the season.
Now, in his fourth year, Trent Johnson has his team in the Sweet 16. I say he is, and has been, a very good coach for Stanford. He’s good at finding Stanford-type players — talented guys like Goods and Hill who fly below the radar of the UCLAs and Dukes, and have the academic records to make it past Stanford admissions. Moreover, Trent LIKES Stanford and wants to coach there — he’s not using it as a stepping stone to another job, as Denny Green and Tyrone Willingham did. To ignore all that and define his Stanford career by a single game (that we won, anyway), as Aaron does, is foolish beyond belief.
And please, let’s drop the stuff about how Robin and Brook fell into Johnson’s lap because their mom was a Stanford alum. Their two older brothers were both recruited by Stanford and both went elsewhere. There’s nothing automatic about recruiting two seven-foot McDonald’s All Americas that every school in the country wants. Ask Oregon about Kevin Love if you don’t believe me.

Wow. Really? I guess I'll have to see it to believe it, but I really am glad for everyone's enthusiasm.

You need to factor in the re-emergence of UCLA, the run Washington made for two years when Brandon Roy was there, Arizona being a consistent power (obviously not this year), as well as WSU and ASU getting better under Bennett and Sendek. The Pac-10 is a very good basketball conference and has improved in the four years since Johnson got there. I see all winning records, improvement, and three NCAA births. Looks pretty good to me.

A QB from Harvard, an AD from Duke, and now a HC from Standord...
...I feel smarter already!
Why do we even need Vandy in the league now? LSU is practically Ivy.

Yeah, I was wondering why everyone is so gaa gaa for this guy. He did a good job at Nevada, no doubt, but I don't think he proved too much at Stanford.

I remember Stanford being a power when "Mad Dog" Madsen was there.
Didn't he turn around Nevada though? I don't remember them being anything before he got there.

Add in a baseball coach from Notre Dame.

If he can get LSU over the hump in recruiting and get the community behind him, he sounds like a wise choice to me...great background!
