Trent Johnson speaks...I kinda like his candidness

The Advocate had excerpts from a Trent Johnson speaking engagement in BR yesterday. The link is below. It is a good read. Johnson pulls no punches. Feel free to read between the lines...I think it will be clear that Brady did not leave the program in good academic shape, and that some of the returning players just didn't progress very much from a basketball standpoint, either.

Very nice read, he sure doesnt pull any punches. Every time I read a quote or hear him speak I truly believe he will make LSUs basketball program something special. Im sold on him being the right man for the job, hes a very good speaker so he should do good in recruits homes selling LSU. Hopefully the practice gym and other upgrades help bring in the athletes to compete with the UCLAs and Floridas of today.

I saw Trent Johnson at Sky Harbor airport on Phoenix last Sunday at around 8 in the morning. I didn't realize it because I didn't know what he looked like. I wonder what he was doing here.

Cool to hear him talk about an LSU team from 22 years ago and know the individuals involved in making that Final Four run.

He's the type of straight shooter I'd like to play for. There is going to be a certain % of recruits who will love what they hear from him, and the parents will have a very high % of approval.

I actually stumbled on video of this last night on TV. He seemed confident in the future of this team, and was very engaging.
Things the article left out:
He put quite a bit of praise on Garrett Green, but said he has a back injury. Also said Dennis Harris will be special, he just lacks the strength right now. He made Delwan Graham cut his dreadlocks off right before picture day.
ETA: And Chris Johnson's put on 15 lbs in the offseason...though I saw him not to long ago and you can't tell

First, neither John Brady or Trent Johnson or any other college coach of any sport is responsible for "leaving" a program in good academic shape. It is the sole responsibility of the student athlete to avail himself or herself of whatever academic resources are available. LSU athletes actually have an Athletic academic center to assist them in their educational endeavors.
However, since you raised the point and there will be those who will attempt to villify Brady are you aware that one of Brady's players, Brandon Bass was THE ACADEMIC ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FOR ALL SPORTS IN 2005?
Are you aware that two Brady's players, Collis Temple III and Brad Bridgewater had earned bachelor degrees and were in graduate school while still playing for LSU?
Are you aware that most of Brady's players who played through their senior seasons either earned degrees or would be able to complete their degree requirements with one or two more semesters?
Brady had 4 Academic All SEC players in 2004, 7 Academic All SEC players in 2005 and 5 Academic All SEC in 2006.
What is Johnson's record at academic bastion Stanford and earlier at Nevada?

Interesting, this same staff has produced 2 All Americans, 3 SEC players of the year and 3 SEC freshmen of the year. How many of Johnson's proteges can make the same claim at his other coaching positions?
This same staff has produced 2 Top five NBA picks with five players drafted in the top 35 picks abd two other NBA draft choices. Seems like pretty good progress to me.

You conveniently left out the following part which would have provided context:
"However, since you raised the point and there will be those who will attempt to villify Brady are you aware "
I did not credit any of those accomplishments to Brady, merely pointed out they were achieved under the same coach who allegedly "left the program in poor academic shape". In all cases it is up to the student athelte to take advantage of the academic opportunities presented. Now, if you can show some way that Brady prevented those players from availing themselves of those opportunities then you might have a case. To do so you would have to prove that he prevented half of his team from achieving academic prowess while teh other were stellar academic performers.
Talk about wanting your cake and eating it too.

I heard him on the radio today, he does seem to have things going in the right direction. I guess only time will tell.
