3. 1991
4. 2000
5. 1998
6. 1996
7. 1986

98 was the best team never to win a title. Unfortunately, USC was a little bit better

no, USC was not fricking better

the weather changed in omaha right before our first game with USC, wind started blowing in, and we hit about 15 warning track flyballs that would have otherwise been off the wall or out

and game 2 we got completely hosed on the strike zone. that cocksucker seth etherthon was getting 20 feet off the plate. frick him, the umps, and the weather, a 3 peat should have been a piece of cake

yes, im still mad

The 'best' for sure would have to be 97', but I still like the Todd Walker and Russ Johnson days.

97 was just absolutely dominant. How many records do they have?

I would put 09 second, but they were more awesome as a team IMO. They put together some gutsy wins and clutch performances. The 97 team was rarely behind in any games

Best team to never win it all - 1998.

I also vote for 1998. Just look at that roster. Not winning the CWS was an absolute fluke.

LINK

That was also the year that the championship game ended 21-14, which first set off the NCAA's crusade to tame the bats.

Once again, I am shocked at the people in this thread that think the 1998 team, with pretty much the same pitching staff, could beat the 1997 team whose lineup had Brandon Larson at shortstop instead of Josh Dalton and Mike Koerner in centerfield instead of a young Cedrick Harris.

I guess no one remembers the 1991 team? My favorite because they not only finally broke out (after LSU had made 4 CWS in 5 years), but butt-crushed a good Florida team twice in Omaha. That's always fun.

Some great pitching on that staff. Plus Hymel and Mouton lurching HRs. Fun stuff.

'98 had better pitchers with Tallet, Ainsworth, and the bullpen l/r combo of Weylin Guidry and Shane Youman. Yes losing Larson hurt, but Cresse was much improved and that was Furniss's career year. But I did say 97 was the second best team.

It is an interesting question whether the 98 team gets overrated by our nostalgia precisely because they didn't win a national championship.

All time LSU Baseball team:

C: Cresse
1B: Furniss
2B: Walker
SS: Larson
3B: Johnson
LF: Cooley
CF: Mahtook
RF: Mouton

SP: McDonald
SP: Choose 2 more from Byrd, Ogea, Sirotka, Laxton, Yarnall, Coogan, Tallet, Hodges
CP: Coleman

I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting, but that's a pretty sick lineup!

97 was the best. Completely and utterly dominant, mainly cause of the bats, but hey, everyone else was using the same ones.

2000 a great balanced team. Speed, power, defense, pitching. underrated pitching here. Good bench

1993 led by Todd Walker and Russ Johnson. Also had really good pitching. Great team defense and timely hitting. Classic LSU team.

2009 young, extremely talented team filled with a lot of great leaders. Top heavy in pitching, but lineup 1-9 had great speed and power threats all throughout. Ballsy timely hitting when it mattered. Great defense in the middle of the diamond

Don't forget Renauldo he is one of Boston's top prospects.

I would also say the '97 team probably because I was JR at LSU that year

I"m going off of memory here, so I could be wrong but...

I don't remember Tallet from '98. If he was a weekend starter, he definitely was not at the same level of the 2000 Tallet. Doug Thompson was the go-to guy in 98, but to my point, he was also on the 97 staff. Ainsworth was dominant in 99, but he was not quite there yet in 98. The 1999 Ainsworth was a bonafide #1 starter, but he was still developing in 98. I'm almost certain that Weylin Guedry was not on the 98 team. I thought he was a freshman in 2000. Shane Youman was never a great pitcher at LSU. I'd rate him a serviceable. Cresse did grow up in 98, so I'll give you that much, but I would hardly call Furniss' 98 a career year. Furniss was just that good for 3 straight years from 96-98. He was awesome in 98, but he was just as good in 96 and 97.
