Anyone who calls a play that has TJ running the ball should lose their position of play calling.

For a Freshman, TJ has played extremely well.
The future is bright at QB.

He needs to make a good decision to add touch to his passes. Everything off his hand is a bullet. That alone takes the underneath and deep routes out of his arsenal. Now the intermediate routes, where you want a strike, he’s been quite good with.

We need a little more firepower to win games. The D is not going to help much. We need 40+ pts. per game to have a chance against a decent team

Good luck with that. With E as coordinator......Peyton Manning would look pedestrian in this offense.

While he does tend to throw the "fastball" on most throws, he has shown touch on the deep ball (see TD to McMath yesterday and first TD to Marshal vs. USC).

Yes, there is plenty of room for improvement. His mechanics aren't great, which will lead to some really bad throws to open WR's (see some of the passes that nose dive to the feet of open receivers). However, he doesn't look completely overwhelmed out there. That, to me, is a great foundation. It's impossible to teach comfort and confidence. You can also see he has some good awareness traits. Not always, of course, but the foundation is there. Getting out of the pocket and being aware of the LOS before making a throw. The game winning TD pass where he unnecessarily left the pocket, but settled back in once he realized the OL had him protected.

He's not perfect. But that's not to be expected for a guy making his 3rd start as a true freshman in a season where spring football was cancelled and on-field work has been restricted. The crazy thing is that after next week (assuming the game is played) he will have more career starts than Brennan. It is also entirely possible that by the end of the season he may have more career pass attempts than Brennan.

He had lots of time - they were rushing 3 a lot and their DLine was patchwork. Hopefully he can also make QUICK good decisions when we play the likes of FL and AL.

Under-appreciated post of the day.

Meh, McMath had to adjust to ball. He was wide open and it could’ve been an easier to catch ball.

He’ll improve, he’s only a true freshman.

He reminds me very much of Rohan davey. Davey took a couple years to get it down pat, but once he did, he was unstoppable. Finley is actually ahead of davey as a freshman

It amazes me what short memories you guys have. Did he make good decisions against Auburn? What was the difference? Did he suddenly get smarter or mature incredibly fast? No, I think it might have been that Arkansas's starting defensive line was out with covid. Therefore they had almost no rush on the passer and TJ had all day to throw the ball.

Florida and Alabama will be more like Auburn than Arkansas. Let's see how good his decisions are when they are coming after him every play and making him run for his life. Will he just take his sacks or will he start getting desperate and panic and make big mistakes. If he survives those two with good performances then I will jump on the bandwagon with you but a season is more than one game against an opponent who is short handed.

I agree with your post in premise, but Shanahan was manhandled all day.

His poise is great. His pocket movement is advanced. His arm is unreal.

However, he throws into heavy coverage and he needs to know when to take a little off. Clearly his accuracy can improve.

He'll be VERY good when its his time.

We should all be thankful that we have a very talented, capable Freshman QB.
I am also thankful that I don’t have to read the idiotic comments claiming that “he’s not ready” or “in a couple years he’ll be ready”, etc., etc.

LSUs ride the pine for 2-3 yr QB strategy does not, has not, and will not be successful as we’ve proven over and over and over again.

TJ has a lot of work to do to be great but he’s got the tools. I was very impressed with how he brought LSU down the field to get the winning TD

Yes it was against a depleted ar-kansas team but he still did it and that’s what matters.

Baby steps folks.

Not really. If they were only rushing 3, it means they were dropping 8. Hard to make fast decisions like that. Good ones anyway. He was patient, kept plays alive, and kept his eyes up looking downfield and waited for Marshal or Gilbert to get open and/or come back to him several times.

He’s not a great runner and never will be (though if he keeps working hard on his body should be able to scramble for a 1st down or 2 similar to Jamarcus by the end of his time in Baton Rouge), but nobody seems to be talking about his ability to always get at least 1 needed yard on the QB sneak. He’s probably picked up 6-7 1st downs on them, which is huge. Even with a bad Oline, as big as he is, he’s almost always gonna fall over for that needed yard. Would have won the Missouri game if they’d have put him in to do just that.

As an LSU fan, it’s hard to comprehend not being very impressed with what he’s doing as a true freshman. There were quite a few folks really down on him on the Recruiting Board saying he would “never play a meaningful snap at LSU.” A lot of that can be attributed to there just being a bunch of assholes over there, but the consensus seemed to be that he was really raw with his mechanics. If he’s already made such huge strides in such a short amount of time, it’s exciting to think of what he may develop into in the next few years.
