As far as open container you fine, never heard of anyone getting busted its pretty laid back like LSU, If I were yall I would buy my liquor before I goto Columbia, in SC liquor stores close at 7 on Friday and open and 9am on Saturday its always packed, so I usually get all my stuff before I get into town just a hint. :cheers
Dude you rock. I'm not going but if I was that would be my primary concern.

Thank you. I cannot wait to see this environment and I think we will get along with the Cocks fans. This is a trip we planned since last year. Great info!

What part of town is the "Vista"?
Posted on 10/15/08 at 7:51 am to penleydr
Piss, moan, piss, moan, just like the gator fans saturday night. florida fans, the majority of the ones I saw saturday night, complain about anything and everything.
BTW, last I checked, NO ONE asked the perspective from the florida fan's eyes. Go find the comfort in the fact I am going to Columbia and WILL NOT take in anything you said.

The Vista is the area bordered just west of the State Capitol between Assembly Street/Huger street and Senate Street/Lady Street. A lot of the bars and restaurants are on Gervais Street, but they also spill onto Lady and Senate.
5 Points is the college bar area. It has a lot more students and is a bit more bohemian. 5 Points itself is safe to walk in, although there are some sketchy residential areas nearby (not NOLA sketchy though) as well as some very nice residential areas.
The Vista is more upscale. It is very safe to walk in.
Most of the hotels are near the Vista. The Hampton Inn and Hilton Inn are inside the Vista itself. The Sheraton, Marriott, Marriott Courtyard, and Quality Suites are all within a few blocks of the Vista.

If I go to the Clemson game at 11:00 a.m. can I make it back to William Brice by 7:00? I'm thinking Clemson is 2 and a half hours away.
If you leave Clemson at halftime. Clemson is a small town a lot like Athens, so the post-game traffic is miserable. And it is a surprisingly long drive.
With the fair in town, pregame traffic and parking in Columbia will be a nightmare. You will be cutting it really close.

co-worker told me about a bbq place called maurice's piggy park...? Supposed to be good? any comment or recommendations on the best SC bbq in town?
As another poster said, barbeque in Central South Carolina is unique. It is pulled pork with a mustard-based sauce, although you can also get pepper vinegar, ketchup based, or a mysterious orange colored sauce.
Maurice's is interesting both because of the slightly sweet yellow sauce, but also because of Maurice's politics. None of the grocery stores will sell Maurice's sauce because he flies a huge Confederate flag over his buildings.
I would suggest the Palmetto Pig as a good barbeque option. It is just off Huger street so is pretty close to where most of you will be staying.

Bad news on tailgating. The Fair completely screws it up. With the late start of the game, there will be another 20,000 people there just for the fair.
One option for parking is to park in the fairgrounds. It is free . . . but you can only park there. The fair jams as many cars in as they can. They do not allow tents, grilles, cookers, tables or anything else.
What you are going to have to do is find a private lot and pay for a bunch of spaces. That is the only way you can set up an LSU-quality tailgate. They go for $10-20 a spot depending on how close to the stadium you are.
If I were you, I would get out there Saturday morning around 9:00 a.m. and scout the area. Fair traffic won't be too bad yet. Most of the private lots will be open because they also try to sell parking spots to fairgoers. When I say private lot, I don't mean the dedicated tailgating facilities. Those are pre-sold for big bucks. I mean the small businesses in the area.
You may want to consider parking in the Columbia Blowfish stadium lot. It is on Assembly Street north of the fairgrounds. It's a fairly long walk -- about a mile -- but you should not have any problem setting up a big tailgate and fitting in a lot of people. Scroll down for map of Blowfish Stadium location.
Allow yourself plenty of time to get into the stadium as pedestrian access ain't that great. The USC pregame is pretty good, so it is worth it to be in your seat 20 minutes before kickoff.
You will be fine drinking at your tailgate. You really shouldn't have much problem having a drink on the walk to the stadium unless you cause a disturbance or get into a fight . . . so maybe you want to tone down the "Tiger Baits!" The stadium is off-campus so you don't have campus police looking to bust students. Most of the police out there are state troopers directing traffic.
A lot of Gamecock fans don't even tailgate when the fair is in town. I lose my reserved spot in the fairgrounds because of the fair, so I just park there and go eat at the fair. You get in free with your game ticket.

Let me know if this works.
Plan to leave Asheville about 1:00 pm, should arrive in Columbia about 3:30 or so. Will park at Blowfish Stadium and take the shuttle to Williams-Brice Stadium.
After the game, take the shuttle back to Blowfish Stadium and head back out.

Just wanted to post a quick reply and add a few thoughts.
First, have a safe trip and please enjoy yourselves!
Second, with the fair being in town and the game being at 8 I would say you probably should head to the stadium area no later than 3, but most likely if you leave 2 you should be fine. The fairgrounds parking doesn't open until 5 hours before kickoff, people usually start lining up an hour or two earlier to get in there. Traffic can be touch and go until those folks get in. There are tons of spaces around the stadium to park and tailgate. Parking is usually in the 10 to 20 range, but with the fair in town it may be close to $30.
Last, regarding open containers. You can walk right up the stadium entrance with bottled, can or beer in a cup. The troopers and officers are not going to mess with you unless you're giving them a reason to mess with you. The stadium provides plenty of garabage cans and recycling bins outside each entrance for you to throw away your drinks right before walking into the stadium. We always get a fresh beer to walk to the stadium with knowing there'll be recycling bins.
Anyway, y'all have a safe trip and please enjoy. Columbia is a fun town, particularly on big game weekends. Five Points should be hoping and the Vista will be moving along as well. As far as Columbia is concerned those are the only two areas worth going out to at night.

There are the usual scalpers up and down the road, but to get tickets sold by fans, you can get them right in front of the north end of the stadium on George Rogers Boulevard.

A minor correction -- the fairgronds parking opens at 8:00 a.m. because of the fair. Normally it is five hours before gametime, but the fair changes it. Parking there is free and open to the public during fair week, but you cannot tailgate.
