Congratulations LSU!

Posted by Mecklenburg Cock on 10/20/08 at 10:09 am
Hey folks, I haven't seen where any other Carolina fans have come on and posted a thread like this......I just wanted to congratulate you all on a great win Saturday night.

A couple of observations:
1. I had a good time talking with the LSU folks before the game. As I told the guys I was talking to (who made the trip from Baton Rouge), I can't tell you how much I appreciate visiting fans making the trip to Columbia for games which is why I always try to make every effort to be appreciative. I've made the trip to Baton Rouge and it's not the easiest and/or shortest trip in the world coming from South Carolina. Therefore, thank you to all of you who came to Columbia this past weekend. Hopefully you all enjoyed yourselves.

2. At halftime I thought we might hang in there and pull out a victory. However, my hat's off to your D Coordinators for the adjustments they made in the second half. They knew we couldn't run the ball and did a great job of disrupting Garcia with the Blitz. Great adjustment!

3. Hat's off to Les Miles. You all could've easily scored there at the end of the game, but you didn't. A move like that may cost you all a place or two in the polls; however, Miles took the high road and showed a lot of class. Again, hat's off to Miles.

Good luck the rest of the way! Thanks to my dad I am also an LSU fan so I'll be pulling for you the rest of the way like I always have. While I know there's a lot of football left to be played, I certainly hope you all will get a shot at redemption against UF in the SEC Championship game.

Cheers!
I read this story this morning and had to call my dad. This story mirrors the reason why my dad, born in South Carolina and growing up in Eastern North Carolina is an LSU fan. After my dad read the Doug's story this morning he sent this email to him (hope you enjoy!):

"Hello, Doug. My name is Tom and I live in Charlotte. I got cold chills when your LSU radio article was shown to me by my son a few minutes ago. And here's why. I, too, experienced a near mirror-image experience of LSU radio discovery much the same as you. And, I agree there's nothing like it.

I was born in '46 to a native of Blackstock(mom) and a native of Columbia(dad) who in fact was born in a house that originally sat on the spot where the Capstone building now sits on the USC campus. Dad was a big Frank Howard fan, used to watch his TV show every Sunday after church. We had moved to Bladenboro in eastern North Carolina when in 1959 I discovered LSU, and it was on the radio. It was Halloween night 1959 - you know what's coming - I had been out with my buddies trick-or-treating. I'd gotten as much candy as my bag would hold and had gone home to spread all of it out on my bedroom floor. Somewhere in this process I decided to turn the radio on, AM of course. All of the stations in our area had already signed off for the night the sun having gone down. I used to listen to WKYC, WWL, WLS, KDKA, and WLAC. But, that night I picked up something I'd never heard before, a football game. Really, I had never heard a football game on the radio. The announcer, who's name you recited in the article, got my attention along with some guy named Billy Cannon. What a catchy name! Needless to say it all led up to THE RUN of a lifetime that 49 years later won't go away. I listened to Billy run that punt back, the announcer being drownded out for some said 7 minutes. I couldn't believe my ears and I have been hooked on LSU ever since. My wife thinks I'm nuts. And that's ok. Billy Cannon the icon is larger than legend regardless of his checkered past of the '80's. Who else do you know who has been selected for the college football hall of fame twice? I've been to Death Valley twice, in '86 to see UNC lose to the Tigers, then again in '02 to see the Gamecocks get theirs handed to them. There is no place anywhere like Tiger Stadium, totally unbelievable. On Saturday nights during football season it's the worlds largest open-air liquor warehouse! No doubt about it! Booze everywhere! And the hands-down best food you've ever had tailgating! Next year is the 50th anniversary of THE RUN. I don't know what's planned for the celebration and I can't imagine not being there. I have a connection to tickets to LSU anytime I want to go so we'll see. And, I'll be in Columbia for tomorrow nights game as I was the last time the Tigers came to town. Tomorrow night I'll be sitting next to the Tiger Band. That's going to be really special. That's it. Thanks for your story. Thanks for reading mine."

Doug was nice enough to respond with in a few minutes to my dad this morning. Here's what he had to say:

"Tom:

Thanks so much for sharing your story. Good old fashioned goose bumps IS a great way to describe what it was like to listen to LSU football.

I, too, heard Cannon's Halloween night run the next year. Another thing I remember about that game is that after Billy's run Ole Miss drove down to the LSU two. Then "here come the Chinese Bandits."

Since those long ago years I have also been able to attend a couple or so games at Tiger Stadium. What a great experience! I will be there at Williams-Brice tomorrow night, too.

Again, thanks for your memories.

Doug"

You can also get Packman on 1400 The Fan in Columbia once you get to town (Of course, 107.5 is still the better of the two for general Gamecock Talk. Plus their gameday coverage is solid).

If you're not familiar with him he does a Southern Fried Football tour during the season. Last year he made the trip down to Baton Rouge and posted some nice photos of the ladies.

FYI, here's little dose of what you can expect traffic wise Saturday. The fair really makes for a lot of headaches on gamedays. Plan to get there early and stay late. Otherwise, you'll just sit in traffic, 20 feet away from your tailgate spot wishing you had just stayed parked for another hour or so.

One of the local Sports personalities up here, Chuck Howard, just opened Lake Norman Bar and Grille up on the lake, but he's also a Gamecock. Nevertheless, he apparently has a ton of TVs and I'm sure our game will take priority over the others.

As for other spots......Might try Angry Ales on Montford Road. They serve tallboys and have a ton of TVs both inside and outside.

All of the Hickory Tavern's are pretty good as well.

Really no other places jump out at me. Picasso's on East Boulevard should be a good spot.
I'm confident the visor will get tossed. If he can get that headset off fast enough you know it'll fly at somepoint. :dude:

Y'all have a good time. With my dad being an LSU fan I've been looking forward to this game for a while.

The LSU crew we tailgated with in Baton Rouge back in 2002 was awfully hospitable to my family and friends that were with us. Hopefully we'll return the favor (If you're near my crowd the favor will be returned).

Cheers!
goinallout, if Green's doesn't work you can also get both beer and liquor at the DDB (Discount Beverage) on the corner of Beltline and Rosewood. They have separate sides for the beer and liquor but it's near the stadium as Rosewood will take you straight down to the fairgrounds.

Icansee4miles, I hate to post this in fear of someone finally cracking down on this, but there are no pat down police. As long as you put it in a good spot you're safe.

re: This game is huge

This game is definitely huge for both sides. You guys have so much talent, but at this point seem to be young and without any proven leaders on both sides of the ball. This game will go a long way to show the type of character LSU has.

On our end, we have momentum after two come from behind wins at Ole Miss and Kentucky. While our defense has been solid all year, our offense sputtered out of the gates. Since the Ole Miss game the offense seems to be playing much better given the emergence of Moe Brown and Jason Barnes at WR. Plus, the return of Kenny McKinley cannot be overlooked. Not only is he our best WR but the leadership he brings to the huddle and sideline was missing. If Garcia plays the way he played last weekend in relief action then he could be a lot of fun to watch (for Gamecocks). He's a fiery competitor that seems to bring energy and leadership to the huddle (something that has been missing at the QB position since Spurrier's arrival).

My dad's an LSU fan and will be at the game with me. It'll be his first night game at Williams-Brice so we're both excited. This game is big on bothside of the field and hopefully will live up to the billing.

^^That's pretty legit. Cook came in as a fast WR, but given his size was moved to TE.
The Clarion is a good spot. You're right, it's right across from campus and is right in the middle between Five Points and the Vista. If you're staying there you'll be fine.
^^The area is fine. However, from where you're coming from it's kind of out of the way.

My biggest problem with Columbiana Mall is traffic. However, there's some good places to eat and the mall is pretty good.

It'll be about a 15-20 minute drive to the stadium from there which also mean 15 or 20 minutes into the Vista or Five Points. If nightlife and getting out into town is part of your plan you might see about some of those hotels on Garners Ferry.

LSUhumbleFAN, you might check in with the Country Inn and Suites. It's right off of I77 at Sumter Highway/Garners Ferry Road. There are actually a couple of hotels there that are perfectly safe (I've stayed in both for weddings and other various events). Plus, Rush's is a block or down the road (Good Chilly-Cheeseburgers).

Also, if you have to get a little further out of town there's a decent hotel up at the Blythewood exit a little further north up I77. That'll get you heading in the right direction back to the Triad area. (I'm not sure what exit number, but it's Blythewood Road.)

Amongst other places, both of those spots are safe and will give you a relatively easy path to the stadium from I77.

Best case scenario, get a place at the Whitney Hotel. Right near Five Points and in the nicer part of Columbia.
Just wanted to post a quick reply and add a few thoughts.

First, have a safe trip and please enjoy yourselves!

Second, with the fair being in town and the game being at 8 I would say you probably should head to the stadium area no later than 3, but most likely if you leave 2 you should be fine. The fairgrounds parking doesn't open until 5 hours before kickoff, people usually start lining up an hour or two earlier to get in there. Traffic can be touch and go until those folks get in. There are tons of spaces around the stadium to park and tailgate. Parking is usually in the 10 to 20 range, but with the fair in town it may be close to $30.

Last, regarding open containers. You can walk right up the stadium entrance with bottled, can or beer in a cup. The troopers and officers are not going to mess with you unless you're giving them a reason to mess with you. The stadium provides plenty of garabage cans and recycling bins outside each entrance for you to throw away your drinks right before walking into the stadium. We always get a fresh beer to walk to the stadium with knowing there'll be recycling bins.

Anyway, y'all have a safe trip and please enjoy. Columbia is a fun town, particularly on big game weekends. Five Points should be hoping and the Vista will be moving along as well. As far as Columbia is concerned those are the only two areas worth going out to at night.
This'll add new meaning to our match up with Arky if Tammy goes there.

Nothing like following in Danny Ford's footsteps!
I loved it! For the same reason I've grown to love Spurrier I have the same appreciation for Miles. He doesn't come in and try to be political-he says what's on his mind and he doesn't sugarcoat it.

I'm with you. Coaching changes have become a season in and of itself.
Charlotte's Charlotte. You know how that goes. Lots of transplant yankees and lots of ACC talk. I grew up here, so it's probably par for the course. Would much rather be down in Colatown. Cola still has that Down South feel whereas Charlotte has lost a lot of that.

I've gotten a good laugh out of your sig/avatar and actually took it over to our message board, www.cockytalk.com, to show the crew there.
Sabbath, didn't even notice until now that you're in Cola. Hope all's well down there!
Oh yea, no doubt. USC fans have been frustrated with the last 5 games and I think lost a little interest with the effort on the field. I was one of the guys going into the Clemson game thinking, "If we play like we have the last few games I'm not going to sit here, freeze my arse off, and watch us play like sh*t." It's one of those things where you run out of bourbon in the game, half of your friends are back on the lot drinking, eating and watching the game on the big screen. Had we not played with the effort we played with many of us would have left.

Thanks for the props on our tailgating and fans. I tailgated with some fine folks from Lafayette the last time I was down in BR. Ate great food and had a great time. Had a blast!
