Saban didn't have him on staff as his defensive coordinator, so I'm not sure how that's relevant. He may be very good at a lot of football related things, but the evidence from his career so far is that coordinating a defense is not one of those things.

My 2-cents...At first I was very disappointed with this hire, mostly due to what I have been reading on The Rant. However, I did a little research last nigth...his last year at Clemson (2011 - this is when they gave up 70 points to WVU in the 2012 Orange Bowl), they won the ACC and, based on the points allowed in each game, the defense seemed pretty good...remember, it's Clemson-the team that usually chokes. Conversely, after his departure in 2012, the defense was decidedly worse with respect to points allowed per game.

According to reports and records, Coach Steele was the DC at Alabama in 2007 and 2008 where the defenses were something like 13th in the nation in scoring defense in 2007 and like 1st in total defense in 2008 (I read this last night and don't remember the exact numbers, but these are at least close). Then, he was seemingly demoted to Assistant Head Coach and Kirby Smart was promoted. While I don't have a link (and I'm not going to research it again), there were a couple bloggers who stated that due to family health issues (what those issues might have been was not stated) Coach Steele asked to take a less active role in recruiting and gameday preparations. According to these bloggers this was the main reason Kirby Smart was promoted and Coach Steele was named something like Head Defensive Coach/Assistant Head Coach. Not sure of the accuracy of this information as it did not come from a news/sports source, so take it for what it's worth...Alabama posters please chime in if you have some knowledge of the legitimacy of this information.

Bingo! More than a few on this forum and around college football think Nick walks on water and Steele was good enough to be Nick's DC and for Nick to hire him a 2nd time.

He wasn't Nick's DC, he hired him as a position coach of inside linebackers, he hasn't worked as a DC in the SEC, his only stint as DC was 3 years at Clemson, 2009-2011.

From RollTide when he was re-hired:
Steele will coach the inside linebackers as he did in 2007-08.
and this also:
Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart will move back and coach the secondary and Steele will coach the inside linebackers as they both did in 2007-08.

Where do you get he was DC at Bama from 2007-08?

Didn't read all the responses, but I'm down with the OP.

Steele has a lot to prove. His proverbial star has shined brighter in the past, but if a defensive coach is looking to retool his reputation, you can't do much better than with the collection of players he'll have in Tiger Nation.

This is from his Bio on the Alabama website...

quote:

Steele will coach the inside linebackers as he did in 2007-08. The UA defense performed impressively under Steele in 2007, ranking 27th nationally and fourth in the SEC in scoring defense (22.0 ppg). In addition, inside linebacker Rolando McClain was recognized as a first team Sporting News Freshman All-American. The 2008 Alabama defense was second nationally in rush defense, allowing just 74.1 yards per game. at unit was third in the NCAA in total defense (263.5 ypg) and seventh in scoring defense (14.3 ppg) as the Crimson Tide went 12-2, won the SEC West, and earned a BCS bowl bid.

This doesn't exactly say he was DC at Alabama, but it does state that the "UA defense performed impressively under Steele in 2007"...this indicates to me that he was in charge of the defense as well as being linebackers coach.

uh, no
The same site will tell you that Kirby Smart has been DC for eight years.

Smart was and is DC, and coached the secondary, while Steele coached inside ILB's both times he worked at Bama.

When Steele left Bama the first time, Smart was still DC but he started coaching ILB's instead of the Secondary, then Steele was re-hired as ILB coach, and special asst., whatever that is, and Smart, still the DC moved back to the Secondary, and Steele coached the ILB's.

I guess the bottom line is If LSU is what we think it is, we should have been able to go out and steal a top DC from someone. IF we can pay someone 1.3 mill we should have been able to hire a top DC. something is just not making since.

Good point. I wasn't real excited about this hire. But its official and we need to move on. The proof will be in the pudding. I hope Steele turns out to do a terrific job.

I don't like the hire, but I will support him just like I do with all LSU athletics. I hope that my initial instincts are wrong and that he is successful at LSU. If we pick up some big defensive commits over the next month, it will bolster my enthusiasm some.

Alabama's linebackers got exposed in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State..

And our D got exposed against Miss St, Auburn, Norte Dame.
Just not understanding you logic. OSU exposed a lot of people at the end of the season and they are the champs. Also on that note, Bama's DL and DB's also got exposed in that game.

Steele is a very good LB coach. I don't think criticism of his ability to coach LBs is reasonable.

The bottom line is that LSU fans were hoping for a guy with a proven track record..who was known as a tactician. Instead, we got Steele, whose reviews go from genius to idiot when you look around.

The good news is that LSU is loaded with talent...so Steele will have a lot to work with. And, with Orgeron on board, the recruiting should continue to be top notch.

I don't know how coach Steele will do but I do know it's time to stop all the doom and gloom. Time will tell if works but now is the time to support all the coaches and players.

Man, Get over Chavis, geese he wasn't all that great. I'm sick of seeing teams drive the field on their last possession when we have the lead to win!
It's not like we have the best recruits on D line so he wasn't all that great at that either.
