Tim Brando Says LSU Fans Are Racist
quote:
He then says "I am just throwing this out there" but
Maybe the reason LSU fans are not supportive of LSU Basketball is because of race
His reasoning:
THought 70 perecent of the players on the FootBall team are black they are still perceived as purple and gold and with uniforms plus they are far away they don't have to deal with they are black
That on the basketball court Fans don't have that distance and so they have to deal with their blackness up front
and third while its Basketball season LSU fans are way more excited about Baseball Sesaon ( a more white team which was implied)
Really surprising that Brando would say this because I've always thought he liked LSU and I've never perceived him to be a complete idiot before this. This is completely ridiculous, though. In the late '70s and early '80s when basketball first started becoming a power, hoops had tremendous fan support, but no one at LSU could even find the baseball stadium back then, let alone find anyone actually in it watching a game. And which player on last year's basketball team was probably the most consistently bashed by fans? Lily-white Ben Voogd.
And as for football, it's ridiculous to suggest that the uniforms and distance make any difference. Is there anyone in the entire LSU fan base who didn't know and "deal with" (whatever the frick he means by that) the fact that Rohan Davey, Jamarcus Russell, Marcus Randall and Jordan Jefferson are African-American? Davey, Russell and, increasingly Jefferson, are among the most popular quarterbacks we've had. Russell Shepard is already a hero to LSU fans before he's even stepped on the campus. Is there a more popular player in LSU football history than Kevin Faulk? Is there a more popular player in any sport in LSU history than Shaquille O'Neal?
To suggest that race has anything at all to do with LSU fans' support of sports is asinine. Consistent strong effort and winning is what draws LSU fans to the major sports. That's what we didn't have for about 12 years and that's why the support faded. In the very first year under a new coach, who is African-American, the support is noticeably growing (not coincidentally as the team is winning).

Why all the hate on Tim?
Because he made stupid as shite false accusations about LSU's fan base.
quote:
Could there be some truth in what he said?
No.
quote:
If so, why can't he speak his mind?
The answer above negates your "if" clause, but he can speak his mind. And we can call him a clueless douchebag if he is of full of horse shite.
And he is.

Well said.
The comparison of the Basketball attendance and Baseball are easy to understand. Baseball at LSU has been one of, or probably the best in the nation for years, including a proud history of multiple NC's. Something for the fans to be proud of during some down years. The Brady years started on the tail end of Dale's time. Things had started slipping and the shine was gone for the Basketball program under Dale. Then probation hampered any recovery. Brady's personality alienated many fans, which added to fan frustrations. Trent has started a recovery that I feel will energize the fans, and this claim by Timmy will not stand. There are racist EVERYWHERE. To use convoluted reasoning to back up his rant is irresponsible at it's worst.

not a bad theory, honestly...but Brando needs ratings, so...

I think he is making a false assumption with what he said.

That's what I thought, too. He needs to be careful of getting them by playing the race card, though. Besides sounding stupid, I mean.

I'd listen to him if he weren't so pompous. As another poster said, he injects too much of himself in an interview.

when I was a student I remember camping out to see Vernel Singleton, chris jackson, and shaq play in a packed pmac while you had tables set up outside the union to give away football tickets (and you couldn't even give them all away). The baseball stadium in the bigining of my many years as a student was very lightly attended.
LSU like many schools has a bandwagon fan base that supports winners. There is nothing racial about that.

Tim is correct. I hear the N word at least once every time I go to a LSU watch party here in Tampa Bay. Makes me sick to hear it so I stopped going.
I went to an LSU watch party in Tampa Bay and that same tired shite was happening so I told everyone there to enjoy my beer but I don't hang with morons and split.

Tim Brando is an immature old man, and he is a complete idiot. It's best to just not listen to him. He always goes off on his dumb arse rants about the BCS, acting as if anyone gives frickIN shite about what his old arse thinks.

So racism has increased from the says of Daddy Dale & the Deaf Dome?
Sorry tiger Tim, you've missed this one.
That said, there are white guys who do not watch basketball because it's mostly black guys. This is not a Louisiana-specific issue.

Agreed, it's about WINNING and if the BB team keeps it up, you'll think Pistol Pete was back.

Of course, LSU fans are racist. Look at the QB situation, folks are still wishing JL beats out JJ for the starter. JL had a horrible year.

You need to edit your post. I am an LSU fan, and have been for a long time, and I hope JJ wins the job. Although I would like to see JL get some redemption, I think JJ is my choice, for my own reasons. None are due to race.
SOME, is the word you left out. Generalizations are what sustains prejudices.

That's ridiculous. I get excited about whatever sport we happen to be playing at the time, and it doesn't matter what color the players are. If green Martians can shoot 3's, throw a 90mph fastball, or has 4.3 speed, let's go recruit them.

Wow....I thought Tampa/ St. Pete would be a good place to move when I get old....Guess not
I would have done the same thing you did...left abruptly

I am not surprised at all that Brando would say something like this...He is a Pompas arse Shock Jock. Several years ago Brando had a local radio show in the Shreveport area and he came off as very anti LSU...He portrayed all LSU fans as Rabid Rednecks...In the last several years while he as been at CBS and LSU has been doing well he has tried to come off as a LSU Fan, he even likes to mentions that his daughter goes to LSU. He will say anything to get a reaction out of his listeners...He is probably setting back reading all these 10 pages of posts getting his jollies off...
