Alumni, players, coaches, staff, faculty, future students and players, families (kids), the band, et al. -- it's not their territory, it's a shared territory.

Why is sttdb so important to gameday atmosphere/the students?

I mean, everybody complains about the song not being played. It doesn't get played because of sttdb. What is so appealing about sttdb that makes the song not being played a good thing?

Nothing. The expression has no merit in its own right. However, attempts to stifle it creates spite. Spite can lead people to make decisions in ways they normally would not.
