Throwing a fade to Devonta Lee?!

I know I’m beating a dead horse but that’s still bugging me. Devonta is a decent player but that’s not his strength. There’s at least 4-5 guys you should have running that route over him.
Feels like a microcosm of the entire season.

Pretty unbelievable.. Going to a guy who's barely contributed at all.. Especially when you got guys like Nabors and Bech

Max throws a much better fade than Nuss
Asking Nuss to do that as a first time for meaningful action in that situation was not the right call
Lee being the target was questionable as well, maybe if Deion Smith was available that would have been the proper call

How tall is BTJ? Peetz is a moron same as Ed

I agree. And I don’t mean to knock Devonta- it was just a curious call. The throw could’ve been better but maybe another one of the receivers could’ve adjusted better and made the catch. Oh well.. hindsight is 20/20. Brighter days ahead!

Deion Smith is the guy I'd probably throw it up to if I had to on a fade in endzone. He's 7 of 10 on contested catches according to PFF.
Maybe Brian Thomas Jr. but he hasn't been great with contested catches himself so far this season (4 of 11 on contested catches according to PFF)
Even Boutte isnt a great contested catch guy - 3 of 8 this year and 4 of 17 last year. It's just not what his strength is.
Jaray with his big body is only 3 of 10 this year and 5 for 18 in his career.

Not just that but Bech was wide fricking open for an easy TD

Devonta Lee has one of the best verticals on this team. He snags over people in practice constantly and is a big body. That’s why they threw him that route.

This.
He was dragging across the middle with, somewhat surprisingly, nobody on defense covering him.

The guy has 15 total targets in his 3 year career here, it's not the guy I'm throwing the ball up to in a pivotal situation.

Don't mind the call, but I do mind the target. You're 5-6th best receiver shouldn't get that nod. If its thrown to #11 or #80 its probably not picked and they might make a play on it. Jimmys and Joes are important boys.

The route tree was absolutely horrible. A straight fade route from the lone WR on the right. The inside WR on the left (Bech) runs an inside slant and takes two defenders with him. If the slot on the left also runs an inside slant (Nabors) he is wide open. This was Brady 101 in 2019.
Instead he runs a pick for the outside WR (Jenkins) to run an inside slant. It takes forever to develop, the defense switched off and he still hadnt cleared traffic when the ball was intercepted. It likely wouldn't have mattered as Nuss never looked left and was locked on the fade all day as it was obviously his first read.
That is the epitome of coaching not putting a freshman QB in a position to succeed.

They threw him three fades on the night. Picked up a pass interference call on the first one, they came back and threw him another one on the very next play that was incomplete out of bounds, then the one in OT. Like I said earlier in the week, they had to have seen something in practice.

Bech ran a slant with one guy on him. The slot did a pick on the outside corner that was covering Jaray, as he also ran a slant like you said. Both Jaray and Bech were wide open. The play call should have had the slants as options #1 & #2.

See: ridiculous WR rotation
Hard for a young QB to keep track of who’s lined up at which position when 3 different receivers are rotating in each play

The guy on Bech had inside safety help who drifted away from Bech due to Nuss eyeing the fade as he is under pressure. He was open for a second but it would've taken a perfect throw and missed tackle for him to score.
The pick route is fine and would've worked if it was one, Nuss' first read, and two, if Arkansas had not rushed 6 guys. If Nabors is running a called trail route behind Bech, he is wide open instantly as the linebackers were blitzing. At the very least, he should have broken off the pick route and run the slant as a hot route.
Hell, I don't even know if we HAVE option or hot routes in this Peetz offense.

I don’t like the play call but Lee and Bech are out two most physical, tall receivers.

We might disagree on how open Bech was, but I totally agree with you on this.

That was a hell of a catch out of bounds though

Fades should only ever be thrown by the most elite QBs on the planet. It is an insanely low success rate play. Stupid call.
