I ain’t no football analyst. And I haven’t seen the film (was in my seat). But . . .

It looked to me like Moo State was consistently getting 6-10 yards running a very quick back straight up the middle.

I know Whit is out, but is this going to be a problem for us?

It will be as long as Keys is late filling the gaps

The Kentucky game showed the CFB world that LSUs LBs and linemen have trouble with counters. Get ready to see that the rest of the way.

Did not mean to strike that tone. It was a terrific game.

Was just looking for some X and On gurus to tell me what they were seeing there.

My nuts and bolts football IQ isn’t that high.

Exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks.

consistently is the key word here. If they were they would have stomped our butts. They did average 4.0 ypc overall for 170 total. Like you I was sitting in my seat and could not discern a 1 yd run from a 5 yd run but they did have some reasonable amount of success running the ball. If Tayor had played and they could pass the ball it might have been a different game story.

The good news is that the points we scored were against their top defense.

Good point. We just seemed dominant on most other plays, so that one stood out. Guess it just bugged me.

Reading up on counter plays and how to defend to try to understand it.

You are asking the people who, despite having one of the best defenses in the SEC, have consistently called for Baker to be fired?

I'm sure you'll get legit answers.

How about why is it that opposing offenses seem to move the ball at the end of the halves?

Yep. We also don't do well with play action quick dump offs to the TE. We're not going to have anymore shutouts this year. But this is why Lane needs to play aggressive on the offensive side. Just outscore everyone. We have the ability to do it.

In game threads are best ignored. That’s all emotion.

I live in hope.

Like most of the stuff here, you find some diamonds now and then. Although only very rarely in my posts.

Seriously, I think there are some serious football people who post here.

That’s the reality. The offense has to score 35 points against opposing teams whose offense has a pulse or isn’t down their starting quarterback and running back.

I always guessed that was two things, fatigue and familiarity.

The defense is most tired at the end of the halves. And the offense has gotten the feel of what they are playing.

They rest and reconfigure at half, so they look better at the beginning of the third quarter.

I never played defense, and what I did play was decades ago and not especially skillful. So this is a complete WAG.

Gave up 4 yards per carry and 170 yards rushing to a walk on qb and 2nd string rb.

All the “but we shut them out” dummies remind me of Brian Kelly calling the fanbase spoiled. We just notice the weaknesses and also notice mobile QBs who are 240 lbs like Byrum Brown could potentially have a big game if it’s not cleaned up.

I thought that was inherent in the “bend don’t break” Baker defense. Maybe not?

So the offense fakes the handoff, drawing in the LBs. The DBs are running deeper in pass protection. The TE is left open shallow and has green in front of him. If the QB is quick and sells the handoff, you have an easy five to ten yards after completion.

Is that how that works?
