skill players leaving early to avoid injury risk

lineman leaving early because of draft grade or personal issues

landry and beckham leaving early because stock likely not going to get higher and dont want to risk that stock on an unknown QB situation

We need to recruit players that suck so this won't happen or tell the recruits to wait until their senior year to pan out.

The structure gives players more incentive to leave, but when every underclassmen who's name has been mentioned with the NFL has left. That isn't the case with other schools.

Some players may not be 'on track' to get a degree and pursuing one was never a priority.
Perhaps doing the bare minimum to stay qualified

There's risked involved in coming back and improving your stock.
1.) Injuries, which these guys see everyday
2.) Not improving your stock

If you're a late round draft or F/A, it probably would have been worth the risk of coming back.

Depends on how badly you want to play football I suppose. The only people really hurting their stock returning are those supposed to go in the first few rounds.

This is my guess. Coming in to play 3 years, it's about all we can hope for these days.

This analysis is correct. Couple that with the fact that LSU recruits NFL potential candidates and you have what you have. What should we do, recruit less talented players who won't get drafted?

True that. The situation really sucks but not anyone's fault really. I wish there was a better way for the players to get taken are of and for the schools to be able to get at least x seasons out of them.

It seems like Les is deliberately steering the program to a "3 and out" approach. It's a 2-edged sword and will be interesting to see how it works out.

I know it seems that way and the quote below from Chavis lends credence. truth is, we recruit elite level talent because the administration, TAF and the fan base demands it. with elite talent and LSU's track record of preparing league ready men our players, quite rightly, have become the target of nfl GMs and player reps. Miles and staff would like nothing more than kids staying 4-5 yrs, getting a degree and moving on. that is not the world LSU/Louisiana live in.

I know only anecdotal, but it was neat to see Peyton and Kevin Faulk return for their senior seasons. They both took a risk but school loyalty and an opportunity to compete for championships prevailed.

Payton had a silver spoon and Faulk was from a different era and a secure family environment. NFL rule changes and the proliferation of media and the sports representation industry has changed that dynamic forever. Christ...if memory serves me right, I remember Billy Cannon signing a contract (with no leagal rep) under the goal posts at his last game.

I know you said 4th rounder, not 3rd rounder, but there is still a significant difference in signing bonus.
People seem to think under the new CBA that 3rd round-through-undrafted are all pretty much the same now

So many people keep spouting off false information. The reason that there is less incentive to come back to school is because of the drop in rookie pay (for all rounds). In the past, it was worth the risk to come back and boost your draft stock because 1st & 2nd rounders were getting huge contracts & signing bonuses. Now rookies don't get nearly as much (all rounds) so why come back to school and risk career ending injury for less than half of what rookies got paid pre-CBA?
In other words, I might come back and risk injury to potentially make $10 mil but I'm not going to risk it for only $2 mil
But the difference between a 3rd and 6th rounder is still (relatively) the same. In other words, the difference between 10 mil and 1 mil is relatively the same as the difference between 5 mil and 500k.

Ok picked 3 players that most of us heard of terron armstead 3rd rd pick of saints, spencer ware 6th rd pick Seahawks, and Michael ford FA bears. Terron armstead 4 yr/ 2.85 MDC with 900,000 SB, spencer ware 4 yr/2.25 MDC 100,000 SB and Michael Ford 3 yr/ 1.5 MDC 5000 SB.
Main goal is to stay on team and hopefully get big money second contract if ford stays on a team and gets to second contract he may have beat deal of the bunch as an undrafted FA. The new CBA is causing players to leave as early as possible that simple
