This is a reply to someone who posted earlier about the technical term for the Possum. It was blocked, so I am posting it here (so my apologies): "You may be trying to correct a "common use" or "common name" usage for which there is little cure. The scientific name for the only Opossum occurring outside of zoos in the U.S. is Didelphis virginiana, but other names for the Opossum are common (e.g., in Mexico, they are called tlacuache, tacuachi, and tlacuachi, from the Nahuatl word tlacuatzin). If we are going to be technical, you might prefer "Rally Didelphis" rather than "Rally Possum." Many of you fishermen like to refer to the fish Micropterus salmoides as a green trout, and some call it a largemouth bass, but it is the same fish (with possibly some variation in color). For me (earning a M.S. in Biology at USM), it matters more to use what most people call it than what is technically correct. I have also observed that many of the scientific names for the snakes and their foods that were used in my Masters thesis have been changed over the last 4 decades. So I find it is useless to try to correct others in this--just try to be correct and give others the freedom to enjoy their own culture. "Rally Possum" works for me."

If it helps give the players a psychological edge, I am all for it. Baseball players can sometimes be an odd bunch with their traditions and rituals, and the Rally Possum is lust one in a long line of traditions.
