They were compared to the 2020 line. They were the worst in decades.

If Dellinger or Turner can manage to just get the ball snapped to the QB itd be nearly impossible for them to be worse than Shanahan.

Shanahan was far better than people give him credit for here. He was basically graded out as above average. Yeah he got overpowered at times but all in all was a consistent snapper and did his job well enough.

Turner never stood a chance of taking the job from Shanahan so I have no idea why your comment that if he could snap it he would be better than Shanahan. They were on the same team together for the last 2 years...

Dellinger I think has a very high ceiling the only issue there is the snapping part honestly. HE could easily be an upgrade from Shanahan but like I said, it might take him time to get things consistent being brand new to the position. That's the wildcard there.

Right. Who did win the Joe Moore Award that season?

Best teams usually suck up a ton of awards even if not deserving. Fact is that OL was nothing special. Joe Burrow, the WRs and CEH were special. Because of that, the OL looked a bit better than it actually was.

It was still the best LSU OL in a while, but it wasnt really close to being the best in the country. Put Bama's or UGAs OL up there and that 2019 LSU team is even better.

The only truly special OLineman from that 2019 team (in that season specifically) was Damien Lewis. He graded out at nearly an 80 on PFF.

Everyone else was in the 60-70 range in grades. Even Cushenberry suffered from his previous season because it was tougher on him going to that no huddle all shotgun offense (77.1 grade in 2018, 61.1 grade in 2019).

Honestly Adrian Magee playing WELL above his head in 2019 is what really helped that OL out a lot.

The O-Line finished last year pretty strong as I recall. And they added a decent amount of talent this offseason. Sounds good to me

LSU ran the ball much better in the second half of the season. But that was as much a byproduct of changing their running game approach moreso than improved OL play.

Still, 3 key, experienced starters from that OL are gone (Deculus, Shanahan, Ingram). What LSU returns are multiple guys who had moments (Wire, Dellinger, Bradford, Martinez, etc), but none who are definite starters going into this season, along with a couple of transfers who had good success...but at a much lower level of competition.

Perhaps LSU's OL will be much, much better than last year. But as a group, there is probably no bigger question mark on the team.

Theres enough talent there to compete this year. This unit is going to get better each week.
Next year this unit will arrive and be a force.
Year 3? You make the call.

It's kind of a concern when the center that can cleanly snap the ball is too small (Charles Turner) and when a natural guard/tackle moves to center with the proper size and strength (Dellinger) can't consistently snap the ball to the QB in the shotgun and then we have to rely on an incoming three star freshman (Fitzgerald West) who played DT in high school and no experience at center but apparently can consistently snap the ball.

Burrow bailed out the 2019 OLine a lot more than most remember

So did CEH with his blocking. He was constantly saving Joe’s butt. Someone could make a highlight reel just from that.

There are indeed lots of question marks, especially with 2 transfers all but a lock to be starting (or getting a huge amount of snaps). And of course C... with a new offense being installed. And minor question marks around things such as how much did Dellinger recover from his injury and are there any lingering effects (we can assume recovered fully, but until we see it live action it is still somewhat of a question).

But these are some talented guys. I think well conditioned too. I'm sticking with my prediction that by at least the last 1/3 of the season we will view them as a strength not a weakness or even question mark. If not by midway though.

To be hones my biggest concern for the OL is integration. Not really a personnel concern outside the Center position. By that I mean a new QB, with a new RB, with a new system, with that new QB having new protection calls with that new RB and C.

Those 3 have to be in-sync or the OL will look like crap, no matter how good the players are. If OL thinks RB is chipping on the outside and he gets caught inside or goes the wrong way that OT looks like shite but it is really on the RB or possibly the QB for not making the correct protection adjustment to coincide with route adjustments.

That's my worry for the OL. I have plenty of faith in the OLmen.

no, he really wasn’t. He constantly was bullrushed into the qbs face. He was an extreme liability and showed just how bad Os offensive line recruiting had become. Shanahan was far from a SEC caliber center.

I used to be on this train myself. But that line had 3 guys go on to start as rookies in the NFL in 2020, and Ed Ingram, who I think is gonna wind up being a very nice NFL player eventually, if not this year. Joe and Clyde made some plays to bail them out for sure, but we played some really good defenses. That OL had some dudes and is currently a little underrated (after maybe being a little overrated at 1st).

I agree with this. This year's unit is a huge question mark. The snowflakes cannot abide such a thought, but it is what it is.

No. Just looking at the facts. A true freshman at tackle has to be a concern. We'll see.

I am curious about center, but overall I think they will be much improved this year. Probably not great but good enough. They have 8+ guys with the potential to start this year, chances are some of them will hit and be a good o line.
