The Mixed Bag that is the LSU career of Donte Jackson

While I like aspects of his game , and am awed by his speed, the deciding play against Notre Dame will always define how I remember his LSU career . This is a kid who has never been half the player he thinks he is. Blessed with ridiculous measurables, he never seemed to be interested in developing the other things that elite defensive backs have .
As you watch that play you see him easily blanketing a slower wide receiver . It looks like a stroll in the park for him, like he’s hardly breaking a sweat, so ridiculous are his physical skills. But then we see Donte go Full Donte....
The receiver then does a BLATANT push off of Donte with his left hand , catches the ball and Donte makes his fatal mistake . Instead of just immediately tackling the receiver or wrapping him up until he gets safety support he gets fancy and reaches in with his right hand to try to knock the ball loose. That’s fine in the first quarter but a recipe for disaster in the last minute in that situation.
The contact with the receiver than knocks Donte out of bounds and Donte is cooked . After Battle gets TRUCKED by the receiver by going in too high , a panicked Donte than collided with Battle and the game is lost . That sequence is only possible with Donte who plays with a speed swag but not a master of his craft swag .
I wish him luck in the NFL , he’s going to have a good NFL career and he was a good Tiger and by all accounts a good kid—but in all honesty I look forward to better corner play next year minus Donte . DBU had the athleticism in 2017 , but with Donte being the primary guy it relied too much on speed and not enough on toughness and fundamentals.

that florida play from last year will always be what i think of when his name is mentioned.
similar to xavier carter kneeling it at the 1-yard line at Georgia in 2004.

Donte was in good position. It took a great throw, physical play by the WR, and a fantastic catch to beat him. Sometimes even the best corners get beat.

I read your post , than I downvoted.

Surtain will be better than Donte ever was. It won’t even be close. Immediate upgrade next year if LSU lands Surtain.

I blame Battle a lot more for that than Donte. Even if he had perfect coverage with no push off from the WR, he had a huge size disadvantage and the WR made a ridiculous catch. Battle had an easy tackle to make with the play completely in front of him and instead did the patented Battle "lead with shoulder and don't use arms" kind of tackle.
Also, Donte is usually a very good tackler.

cornerbacks live on an island. nice myopic view. I for one hope he comes back.

A lot of people don't realize where Jackson comes from. Riverdale HS, terrible fricking coaching, terrible program. He was a 2 way player, mainly offense, who just started to get good coaching on defense when he came to LSU. He is still so raw. He was a good player for us.
He has some faults. Doesn't like contact at all. Poor tackler.Gets lost in coverage every once in a while, but what CB doesnt. But in 2-3 years dont be surprised when he is a really good NFL player.

He’s at best a nickel back. No way should he ever be playing on the outside.

The receiver made a one handed catch and a great RAC.
It should have only been tied at that point.
We need 3 inches on other end and we kick a damn fg.

Whenever someone makes a big catch on him he never tackles them. He did the same damn thing on that 99-yard touchdown pass he gave up against Florida last year.

Wish you would have started your post off with this so I knew to stop reading. Thinking our secondary gets better next year with Donte is laughable. How quickly you forget how he played out of his mind against Auburn in the 4th quarter.
If that ball isn't caught one-handed following a push off you aren't posting this.

Donte Jackson's technique of trying to strip the ball vs tackling the receiver once again bites LSU in the arse.
Just tackle the damn ball handler. I don't understand how hard it is for these defenders to understand this simple concept.
He's not the only one doing this dumb shite, but it has been his defining weakness throughout his LSU career.

Goes back to coaching expectations

Good post.
I could have done without his over-celebration of routine plays, then getting beat by a completion followed by getting physically brushed off like a rag doll on long scoring plays.
He has potential, but I for one, will not consider his position a downgrade next season. I don't find he has the ball skills typically needed to overcome his lack of physical play to succeed at the next level.

Donte was in position to make the tackle. Instead of making the smart play, He went for the swatting at the ball instead, and the rest is history.

I was going to call you an idiot, but then I read this. We agree on what Donte is - a top notch college corner with almost can't miss NFL potential - we just disagree on how valuable that is.

Donte Jackson just needs to go to the NFL and let them develop him because LSU or Raymond has done all he can for him at that level. Jackson is not a good cover CB, he is not physical as yesterday obviously showed and has been throughout his whole career, mainly because he is still light in the arse. He needs to get up to 190 pounds and I thought he would do that with Moffitt, but he seems content on staying around 170 for whatever reasons (Probably for his track regimen). But I look forward to seeing Kristian Fulton take his spot and form a solid tandem with Greedy Williams, but Jackson's LSU career is done.
