Miles' announcement that JJ will start for the Auburn game is on the face of it, downright startling. Not only does it defy what we have seen with our own eyes for the past three games, but it defies the statistics between JJ and JL.

So wtf is going on?

Why would a man like Les Miles, head of the LSU football machine, persist in the direction he's going when it appears playing JJ is like a self-inflicted (to the team) handi-cap?

The only sane theory I can come up with, and for some it may indeed seem insane, is that Miles is either a coach of true character or one who aspires to be a coach of true character, despite the risk to personal reputation, career, or both.

So, in this character vein runs Miles' desire to make JJ a good, if not great, QB; he's forcing JJ to man-up, to stop f'ing up, to become a productive member of the team. Miles' will start JJ every game despite the opponent and despite JJ's continual failures and apparent regression in skill. Meanwhile, Miles' persistence to not let JL have more of the QB time, is to make the road tough for him as well and for similar but slightly different reasons. If JL starts one day, Miles will have, to borrow his phrasing, "squeezed out the fat" (pick sixes) to get to the "leaner meat" (pure performance from the diamond in the rough that JL may be).

If the foregoing is an accurate assessment of the situation, and Miles can continue to win in this fashion, then he is truly not only a genius, but a man of stellar character the likes of which we have not seen coach on the gridiron. For what coach can claim to forge men out of boys and win it all in the process?

He may truly be the most interesting person in the world, the college football world anyway.

I didn't find much sanity in that theory.

I have a different take that dawned on me today. If Les can somehow run the table with one of the worst starting QB's in D1 since the forward pass became popular, he will be able to truly take his place as one of the all-time greats. Kind of like winning the US Open blindfolded.

great work, and i agree. He is sqeezing the fat. JJ did better in the florida game and i think they are both making each other better.

Great post

I thought he said started players based on performance?

It definitely isn't because of seniority.

Have you heard of Occam's razor?

The answer is our coach is a blithering idiot.

You give Les Miles way too much credit, man. He isn't a terrible coach but calling him a genius is comical.

I honestly believe that Miles is convinced that our best way to win games is to run the ball, no matter who the ball carrier is or if the play is a productive gain or not.

And being 7-0 has only cemented that idealistic, but misguided gameplan futher.

Well there has to be a reason for it other than his being stubborn. What person clings to an ineffective starter for no good reason when his job is on line?

I can't figure it out.

Maybe he just likes screwing with all of us - kinda like pouring gasoline on ants and setting them on fire.

Miles has me so confused that I dont know what's up and what's down. I 've just come to the conclusion that I dont worry about what he says or does. I just wait for the game to see what happens. Seems like Miles can make people crazy.

i read the first post in this thread. it is idiotic not to play lee the entire game...this has nothing to do with character and everything to do with idiocy.....miles is just a stubborn, not very bright, hard headed big ten lineman

I said pretty much the same thing a couple days ago: Les Miles has a want to set challenges for himself. He's already won an NC. He wants to do it now with a big handicap.

This is more plausible than the OP, imo
