Max Toscano has a good thread breaking it down.

Essentially the 3 down look is designed for the DL to eat up blocks/take up space allowing for the LBs to make the plays in the run game. The 4 down look is designed for the DL to penetrate and create disruption. Max wrote before the season about his concerns with LSU running a 3 down defense.

Looking at our personnel idk why it took hiring Pete Jenkins for us to make the switch.

sometimes an outside perspective can give you a view of things that you can't see when you are up close and personal. Coaches get stuck trying to coach up the player sin the scheme and don't realize the scheme is the issue because it doesn't fit the players.

Its why CEOs hire consultants to evaluate their company. Its hard to see issues when you're in the thick of it.

Ive been saying we should have 4 down lineman and Perkins should be an outside linebacker.

Agree, we should have been running the 4-3 all season. With Perkins on a spy mission. This will make a difference tomorrow. Good plan.

You’re not wrong. Now with a 3-4 you can still get into a 4 down “look” to help with our struggles. Offenses don’t judge a defense by if someone is standing up or hand in the dirt. It’s all about where the DL lines up. You can still be a traditional 4 down team and get into a 0 and 4is with the DL.

You can get into a 4 man look but they really need more beef on the line.

Their 4 man front was Wingo, Smith, perkins, and Jones.

They really don't have the correct personnel.

I'd rather run a true 4 man line with perkins and weeks and your two linebackers.

I think it will be better but nothing is getting completely solved with the personnel.

Running a 3-4 defense is completely fine when Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips are your ILBs. That's not where we are right now.
