Fortunately, last year we were able to get a few turnovers and make the occasional big play

Not to mention we got the luckiest of draws by getting Tenn in Atlanta and OSU in New Orleans.

I don't think we beat UGA, or Fla either for that matter if either would have gotten to Atlanta.

If we would have had to play Oregon or WV in New Orleans... I mean hell, OSU moved the ball pretty well against us as it was.

And I'm not apologizing for what happened because LSU did what they needed to do and the others did not. However, the opponents we ended up facing masked a lot of problems.

I'm wondering if Miles gets defense. He hired Bill Clay at OSU and now this. Makes you wonder.

as for the oritinal post in this threat, there is one thing in common, both coaches were position coaches last year and we have the same problems but worse. I think Pelini was a bigger stickler for technique and got in their faces more.

The real problem is that we are playing a Big Ten style read zone. If the front gets pressure, it creates turnovers. No pressure = Big Plays. We have great athletes that need to be unleashed. The secondary is not capable of reading routes and playing the zone correctly. We need to play a tough man to man style like Will Muschamp used when he was here and at Auburn.

I ask you the same thing. How is that possible when LSU finished # 3 in total yards on defense. If we got gashed, then it should show up in the stats.

Stats don't lie. Pelini's defenses were consistently highly ranked on NCAA defensive statistics during his tenure at LSU. LSU was known for its stout defense while Pelini was here, and this directly resulted in great Win/loss records. These stats were compiled while playing in the SEC. People are reaching to blame Pelini for this year's disaster. Some fans are so pissed about this year that they're arguing last year's NC shouldn't count because we lucked into it, or we backed our way into. Really quite humerous to watch these drama queens.

LSU's defense last year had an experienced playmaker at each level (d-line, linebackers, cornerbacks and safety). As for Pelini, I think he adapted his style after the second half comeback by Tennesse in 2005. Pelini attempted to play a soft zone and a don't lose mentality. He heard the cries of Tiger Fans and became extremely aggressive. This year the co-DCs haven't adapted to anything. Yes, our offense has struggled, but Saban won with incapable quarterbacks. If Tennesse gets an offensive minded coach, then an undefeated season in the SEC will become nearly impossible. We need to get one defensive coordinator with an aggressive man to man, in your face defense. It has worked in the past, and it can work again.

I believe you have to blame miles for hiring pelini, not seeing the problems with the scheme, not hiring a new dc and keeping the scheme. I believe this is the type of defense miles likes. why??? Bc he is the fool that brought it in and refused to change it or even acknowledge that there is a problem with it. The defense fits his conservative style perfectly They pay miles millions but anyone can see the defensive problems since pelini has been here, they pay him top money to run this program and make the decisions to keep lsu on top but, this man cannot see these defensive problems the last couple of years?? Do you see anybody running this shite in the SEC??? It is sad that is has come to this point where the fans have to speak out, leave games early, etc. Just to get the attention of someone they pay millions to see there is a problem.

The games we lost last year were due to the defense letting us down in crucial situations.

Even if you read his current comments, he seems to pass a lot of the blame to the offense. WTF?

It's DiNardo 1998 all over again. I've been saying that since the Mississippi State game.

I have read on this board that Miles offered the DC to Muschamp but that he turned it down.

After Dunbar got fed up and left, Jimbo had enough and left, why would Muschamp come back?

Question-Peveto was known as a bump and run, blitz type of DC when he was at NW State,Houston and Middle Tennesse, This conservative type defense we are running now, do you all think this is what Coach Miles wants his DC's to run, It seems after the 4th game last year we have just played a read and react laid back defense (exception Ohio State)

I'm guessing this is what Miles wants because he says the defense in playing very well in his pressures despite getting blown the frick out against 2 and 3 star recruits

Looks like a pretty good analysis of the problem to me. So what's the solution?

Unfortunately I don't think you can fix that between now and the ARK game.

One thing that would make an immediate impact is to play the fastest LB (or best cover LB) at MLB on passing downs and teach him to get some depth to force the ball deeper down the field on the sknny post and seam routes, giving the safeties more time to react to the ball in the air. Right now the MLB is getting no depth and the QBs are able to throw it in there on a line instead of having to put air underneath it to get it over the LB. (to see this in action - watch Urlacher play pass defense)

The safety play is one thing that really confuses me due to all the talent at that position. It appears that some basic coaching on dropping deeper into their zones and reading the QB's eyes would be a dramatic improvement to whatever it is they are currently being taught. Think about the first TD pass Ole Miss threw on Saturday - 3 DBs on the defensive left side of the field - all jumped the out route and no one covered the receiver breaking to the middle. If the Safeties were deeper, perhaps they give up a 10 yard gain instead of a TD. IMO the safety's job is to not get beat deep. Jumping the short route and leaving the deep route uncovered in inexcusable.

On TV they implied that the 3rd and long Ole Miss TD pass was a blown coverage by Phelon Jones...

...if so, how much responsibility does Phelon have for the play versus the co-DC's ?

But those blown coverages have been consistent this year. See the UGA game where Stafford hit a wide open WR covered by Eugene as an example. One blown coverage due to a player mistake is one thing, but if the issue arises consistently throughout the season it is a sign of coaching.

many of the blown coverages are a result of the plays getting in late and the players have no idea what the call is.

You need to go back and compare the first half of last season to the second. The D was on fire in the first half. Then Alexander and Dorsey got hurt (there may have been other injuries, I don't remember). If the D stays healthy all year it gives up far less points. If it has RJF all year it gives up far less points.

Scheme is a problem this year, as are fundamentals. We need a new DC. But, talent wise, I think we can be playing good ball soon.

Bingo! We have good, if not great, athletes on defense. Fundamentals are killing us. We do not tackle well becuase our safeties and LBs are trying for highlight reel hits, instead of just making the tackle (see Coleman, Sheppard, Riley and, to a certain extent, Beckwith.) Our best tackler right now may be Cutrera. I also think RJF is more effective at DE than DT. Tyson Jackson has also been a bit of a disappointment this season. Chris Hawkins appears to be the weak link at CB (getting beat consistently on man coverage.) CB technique is also suspect (see Peterson not looking for the ball on 2 consecutive plays against Ole Piss. Snead made great thorws on both, though,) Perhaps a shakeup in coaching and philosophy will help us on defense next season.
