Didn't LSU and Les Miles agree on a contract? Shouldn't that contract be abided by on both parts? The same goes for players (professional). They have a good year and want to renegotiate their contract. They have a bad year and "HEY WE HAVE A CONTRACT! Pay me my money". This is really something that has puzzled me for years. Just abide by the contract that you signed.

Soooooo, Gene Chizik should have not been fired because he has a contract, right? It goes both ways, do well get a raise, underperform get fired or cut.

He has gotten extensions in 2011 and 2012, plus added incentives.

If you feel you deserve a raise and have some leverage, in Les' case nobody better out there or an offer, wouldn't you try and get a raise?

Les Miles is in a position to renegotiate because he knows he is the best coach LSU can hire not named Saban or Meyer. Pay the man. He is the best we got.

The answer will always be 'no'

I believe in incentive base contracts. Structured correctly, and neither party gets screwed.

This makes sense, but a lot of time people won't leave an existing situation without some guarantees. Also, a good coach is in the driver's seat. They've got a good job already. You've got to convince them to take a chance on a potentially better one.

I would feel like I've got a signed contract and maybe I should negotiate new terms after the contract expires. That's the point of the contract.

but if someone comes to you and offers you a 50% raise with same levels of job security, arent you going to go to your current employer with this information?

I wasn't speaking directly about Les' contract, simply contracts in general. And obviously I don't support 100% incentive based contracts. There needs to be a reasonable base pay.

Without a doubt I will. But I will say this. I won't ever ask to renegotiate a contract or ask to be let out of one. I agreed to it afterall. If they choose to rework the contract to offer me more money, I would do it.

People need to understand Arkansas supposedly ofered him the crazy amount. I dont think he told his agent to ask about the job. Why would he even think of going to Arky anyway? All of this speculation is stupid. I hope Les comes to the podium like he did before SEC game and say I'm staying. What fool wouldnt look into a chance to make more money. After considering everything I dont think he stays at LSU just for a raise. He knows its one of the top 5 jobs in the country with a recruiting hotbed.

Yes, and the incentives have been sweetened since 2011

A Peach bowl berth?????

Seriously, enlighten me
Way to troll there. Les' record speaks for itself. The fact that he maintained/raised LSU's level when he replaced Saban in 2005 is one thing- a whole lot of coaches, even really good ones, have to go through a rebuilding process. Arky might be 4-8 this season, but Petrino had them approaching 10 wins pretty consistently- Miles wouldn't have to burn the place down to get them back there.

Then you have 2010 thru 2012. Miles' response to the "he only won with Saban's players" whispers- 34-5 record these last 3 years. Proof he wins, period.

People like to rag on Miles because he "only" won one BCS title, but seriously, there is another aspect to coaching- consistency and basement. Where does the team usually finish, and how low might it fall? With Les, you're looking at 10-2 any average season, regardless of who else is out there. Doesn't matter if you have Bama and Florida coming off nat'l titles on the schedule, Miles is gonna bring a top-10 team each year. As for falling/off years, we saw a collapse in 2008- and that went 8-5 with a dominant bowl win. That shows he can both still be successful while the house is burning (instead of doing an Arkansas/Auburn fiasco), and the bowl win shows he can keep the players focused while things are not rosy.

Miles is a top coach. Probably any team in the country would love to hire him- even successful ones like Bama, if they had to replace their current guy.

If you had the leverage to renegotiate your contract, you'd do the same damn thing. Don't act surprised that coaches do it.

Contracts are renegotiated all the time as circumstances change. I don't think Les "deserves" a raise. He is already one of the highest paid football coaches in the nation.

Deserving a raise and getting a raise because someone else is going to pay you more are two different things though.

And as far as the Peach Bowl, I think all Tigers fans wanted more, however, we are only in the Peach Bowl because the SEC is so top heavy this year and other teams may get picked ahead of us for all kinds of reasons. We will not be in the Peach Bowl because we deserve to be there.

cute picture. Very witty and original.

Ok, I guess your supposition is right, Miles sucks. This must be all a conspiracy by the "sunshine pumpers", nobody has really offered Les anything.

keep thinking that, cool guy

When you gain the leverage to improve your situation you do it. What is so confusing about that?
