The "chess match" versus Clemson kept me on the edge of my seat.

1. Clemson D versus LSU O: I was irritated by Burrow using all of the play clock and risking delay of game penalties. It got us one delay of game penalty and caused two timeouts (one in the first half and one in the second). But it was obvious what was happening. The LSU offense would show a formation, Clemson would adjust, Joe would look to the sidelines, with 6-7 seconds left LSU would start to readjust with no time left for the Clemson D to readjust. Sometimes Clemson guessed right and made good plays. Burrow and the LSU O just made more of the right calls which led to making more plays. My big concern the first half was that CEH was not getting enough touches. However the running game did not disappoint because Joe supplied the needed running yards with his feet. LSU had to go to their 6th option (Joe's feet) and it proved to be productive. Clemson had and answer for everything except Joe's feet in some critical situations.

2. Clemson O versus the LSU D: Clemson offense inability to adjust after Aranda adjusted hurt them. Clemson came out on fire the beginning of the first and third quarters when the coaches had time to develop a plan of attack against the LSU D. The first quarter Clemson was killing our D on the edge. Aranda adjusted and our OLB remained disciplined and Patrick Queen focused on Etienne. I can't say enough about Queen's play. He shut down Etienne and forced the Clemson offense in to obvious passing downs. After Clemson made their last run early in the 3rd quarter Aranda adjusted and the LSU D clammped down. Clemson's O couldn't readjust.

Cool/nerve racking to watch. Truly the two best teams out there playing top level ball.

That QB sneak with no timeouts left was one of the ballsiest moments I've ever witnessed. Sheer fricking beauty.

Venables was disguising his coverage and blitz packages. Joe was basically guessing (he admitted as much later on) what he was going to see in terms of rushers vs. coverage. The call on the Moss throw (illegal man downfield) in the beginning of the game threw him and the team off. He said he knew he'd get rolling eventually. Joe was good on the run and Clyde was good as well (Total 32 carries for 165 yards!). But Joe was surprised that Chase was going to be man covered, and they went to him big (9 catches for 221 yards) against an all-ACC first team DB.

I agree Queen was great, and I very much was still getting angry on how many times Chaisson gets held. He's probably going to be a monster at the next level. The DBs covered so well that TL only had one choice to put the ball in the air overhead hoping his WR can catch it. Because otherwise, there would have been many interceptions.

All great points.

One additional point. LSU provided enough pressure on TL to force him out of the pocket and throw on run. It proved to be successful for the LSU D. TL is a lot less accurate when throwing on the run (unlike Burrow who still maintains accuracy on the run). The LSU DL forced TL into several key over and under throws that led to incompetitions in the second half.

Two keys.

First.
Clemson’s defensive talent couldn’t handle LSU. The 3-1-7 only works with the 3 getting pass rush. This forces Joe to throw before LSU’s more talented receivers separate from the 7. And the 1 must contain Joe’s feet. Only Auburn had the talent with the 3.

Clemson had to blitz. Eventually, E and Joe would figure it out and score. We did in the 2nd quarter and 4th. A missed FG and Victory Formation prevented 52 points.

Second.
Clemson’s receivers couldn’t consistently overcome our DBs without a running game from Etienne and Lawrence. And LSU’s D slowed Clemson down enough for LSU’s O to score a large enough lead. Once Clemson was forced to drop its running game to play catch up. Lawrence doesn’t have the ability to hit tightly covered receivers under pressure without the threat of running.

LSU wins 97 out of a hundred. Fortunately this wasn’t one of the three.

Joe running made all the difference in the world. Clemson either sold out on bringing pressure or maxing coverage. But with this offense there's always gonna be something open, and they couldn't cover Burrow tucking and running. I thought he could have run a lot more, but he's so committed to finding an open receiver.

And that screen pass to Chase goat play call.

Once again the offensive staff showed they are ELITE at in game adjustments. We've never seen anything like that.

screens and draws not just hot routes that were covered early on with man press.

we waited until second half to screen them

thankfully QB draws helped give relief from blitzers.

That was an amazing call. B, E and Joe beat the Clemson D and Venables' blitz on that play. It was a thing of beauty.

LSU offense figured out their exotic defensive packages early in the second quarter, about when Aranda figured out the Clemson offense. LSU won the game in the second and third quarters.

Great point. All I've heard from the experts is that he was "uncharacteristically throwing high" but they didn't give LSU credit for that.

I thought the first two runs by CEH early got us going. It was like Joe remembered oh yeah I dont have to throw it every down, and it calmed his nerves.

We definitely played tight and they played like they had nothing to lose early on.

I would have liked to see more screens as well and overall more use of CEH, but the bombs to Chase were $$$

What the LSU D showed last night is TL is accurate in the pocket when he gets a chance to set his feet however he is inaccurate when he is force to throw on the run.

I jokingly told my buddy just before halftime that they needed to put Devin White on Etienne the rest of the game. Queen stepped up and did just that, he is turning into an elite player.
