Well, I'll garnt you this, Texas Tiger.
That's as good a recommendation as I have read for STTDB:
"I can imagine things worse than this chant (like killing the opposing mascot), so it must be good, wholesome fun. Leave the kids alone!"

ElPrez,
Tell me how you've concluded that the people who disapprove of the chant leave the stadium early.

I havent, and I have nothing to support that.

Besides, how does this somehow cause the language to be anything other than lame, immature and vulgar?

It doesnt. Its extremely immature.

quote:

Is there ANYTHING cute, witty, amusing or otherwise redeeming about it?

Not a damn thing.

But, if the question is what makes LSU look worse, empty seats>>>>> overzealous, dumbass students.

empty seats or dumbass students?
Are you cereal?
If you go to Stanford, Yale, Vanderbilt, UVa or even NC on a given fall weekend, you'll find empty seats.
Dumb arse students are more difficult to find.
Which reflects more poorly on the college?

I attended a Wisconsin game 2 years ago and the stude section yelled "eat sh*t" and "f*ck you" back and forth at each other... get over it your in a college town at a college football game. this is what goes on. If you dont like it dont come. I assure you tiger stadium will be fine without you. Your probably one of the douches that leaves early every game because "its getting late" anyway

Which one of these schools is as competitive as we are?

Which one of them has a stadium with as many seats as ours?

ETA: Are any of those known as the most intimidating stadium in college football?

Have you set foot on a college campus in the last 30 years?

I think the question was which reflects better on the college: dumba ss students or empty seats.
From the responses, I assume you equate the college's reputation with it's football program and the size of the stadium.
Lots of people on this site seem to agree with you.
I don't, but I'm proud of the football program.

Tigerbait,
Glad you made it from Natchitoches/Shreveport to Madison, Wi.
Most stadia have student chants which have some sort of obscentiy in them. Even the Ivies ("What's the color of horse shite? Brown!Brown!Brown!").
I join lots of posters who don't find the obscenity alone offensive. The problem with STTDB is that it's gratuitious, stupid, immature and lame and excessive. It's not funny, clever, witty or ironic. It makes us (or some of us) look drunk, classless and stupid.
In vino veritas.

During a nationally televised game, especially a conference game, when the network does an overflight of the stadium at halftime and sees it empty and you hear the two ESPN talking heads making comments about it, yes it does. Not to mention that people outside of Baton Rouge will probably never know that the chant goes on.

Also, I saw a bunch of players tweeting about the half empty stands and that they obviously noticed that the fans were giving less than 100% effort. Never heard any players worried about STTDB.

Wow, I misunderstood earlier. And like I said I don't yell this particular chant. You are spot on nitwit, it is not clever, witty or ironic. I did however laugh the first time I found out what it was the students were yelling.

As far as I know, when it started it was a message to the administration about Oh-Wee-Oh at the South Carolina game and it just never died. I'd be willing to bet if the administration did not overreact to both Tiger Rag and Oh-Wee-Oh, we wouldn't be having a conversation about STTDB

Oh, so it is ok to call people retards, but cussing is out of line?

Got it.

Yes, I can call you a retard. It doesn't reflect negatively on the school. It does not effect any families, children, or like.

It is one man (me), calling another man (you-supposing you are a man) a retard. You're trying to create a double standard but are drawing no parallels. You need to let this rest because you sound stupider after each post.

And by the way, the 1st time I heard the chant I laughed. That doesn't mean I agree with it. I also certainly understand those that are offended by it. Do I want my 5 year old to hear it. NO. If he does, can I be a responsible parent and handle the situation? Absolutely. I wont portray it as social acceptable to my child though. The fan base represents the school as much as the players.

Would want J. Hill flipping off the other teams fans after a touchdown in the south endzone? I would hope think not. It would make LSU players seem like out of control assholes. How do you think the fan base is viewed as representatives of alumni and future alumni when they chant in unison: STTDB?

Let me help you..........like out of control assholes

Id agree with this. As others have posted, the best way to get people not to do more stupid stuff is to not make a big deal out of the stupid stuff they are already doing.

Agreed

And it just verifies to the opposing team and any media that LSU's student body is immature and obsessed with the male penis

I'm 23 years old, and I find that chant neither cool or clever

Kill it with fire..The students can come up with something better

Exactly, tell a college student "hey you are being dumb so we are taking this away (a song in this case)" is only going to prompt more stupidity

I've always thought the solution is pretty simple. Prior to playing the song, do a public service announcement on the big screen from one of the team leaders. He could say how much "Neck" and "Tiger Rag" add to the atmosphere of Tiger Stadium and motivate the team. He would then ask those in attendance to refrain from adding profanity because they don't want to lose the songs.

The student section is then faced with....do you want to self-indugle and giggle because you got to say a curse word out loud or do you want to support your team.

Is there really a 12-page thread about STTDB that does not even spell out what it means? That is the epitome of pathetic.

Sounds like a fine solution to me, I've never chanted it because I do think it's dumb, but being in college I understand why it came about.

I notice your sarcasm and I've actually been several times and its not bad. My point which you obviously miss is you can sit here and bitch about it or just not go. It's going to happen regardless of what you think. Do I join in on it. No, but I know if I bring my child to a game he can expect to hear something he doesn't hear at home.
