The last two years, we had only a small band at the spring game, and yesterday it was huge. Does anyone know what the deal was? Was it recruits, alums, or is the GBDTL growing that much??

They allowed high school kids to play. The band actually has been shrinking

Great for band recruiting, you would think.

They gotta do something. Tiger Band has been a giant shite show for a few years, now. The Roy King saga has hurt it even more. Music School and Tiger Band fighting for the scraps leftover from Jindal's drastic cuts. Just 10 years ago, Tiger Band was one of the top 5 (if not no. 1) in the country.
Right now, I'd rank East Ascension High School above Tiger Band.

A lot of stuff at LSU has gone down since F. King Alexander showed up. Long story short, as it was told to me, King brought in his pal Queen to take over the Department of Music. Queen, Damon Talley, and their cronies basically instituted a money grab and appropriated funds that, in the past, had always been protected for Tiger Band. Supposedly, Roy King fought back, so he was shite canned. A lot of band members got pissed, so numbers went down. I also heard rumors that Queen had done the exact same thing at his previous university, which resulted in their band going to complete shite.

While it's true that Tiger Band has definitely dropped in numbers and overall quality and power of sound, to say that a high school band is better is asinine.

I am no band nerd by any means so I can only speak as a common fan. But the game day performance and sound of the band last year was a big improvement over the last few years IMO. I think this new band director can do good things with the band.

the 2016 band was a BIG improvement over anything Roy King ever did with TGBFTL. I'm betting the 2017 band will be back up in numbers and even better than 2016.

What I was not a fan of was a few times I heard the band play tigerag different than what is normal for LSU. It sounded closer to Clemson does and it sounded like a damn train wreck.

I agree that the halftime shows last season were much improved over those from the past few years.

I sure hope so, because most of the time I could barely hear them. Our band is already one of the smaller ones in the SEC. Less brass and more woodwinds, which is what we had last season, equals a big drop off in power of sound.

Just my prediction, numbers will continue to shrink because of the TOPS fiasco. Less kids at LSU means less kids in the band.

Realistically the numbers have dropped almost every year since 2008 when budget cuts started. I think that has a LOT more to do with the size then the director or anything else. Before the budget cuts started they could offer almost every out of state student worth a damn a full tuition scholarship (it's what I had). That scholarship no longer exists.

Odell kept signaling for them to play neck. I mean it's a spring game.

Joe, let them play neck or resign. #NotMyAD

Jindal's drastic cuts

Did you know that the Governor, ANY Governor, of this State has only two choices in regard to what he can cut? Yep, Education and Health Care are all he's allowed to cut, BY LAW.
Re;East Ascension Band: That carpet munching, low life band director bitch is a pretty good teacher.

While that is undeniably true, it is also a fact that it was a policy of Jindal and other governors of his ilk to basically defund public universities as much as they could.

So, combined with 1.) the end of post-Katrina federal funds; 2.) The repeal of the Stelly plan; 3.) the massive tax cuts instituted by Jindal--with no action to replace that revenue; Ayn Rand influenced governors have slashed public higher education funding to the bone. See South Carolina, Wisconsin, Kansas, etc.

There were no billion dollar deficits until Jindal came into office.

There is no downfall. If you were a musician you would know this.

The program adjusts and changes each year as usual. Change does not equal downfall. I'm guessing you are a current or former student still butthurt they don't let you sing the ultra classy STTDB melody.
