I was there all 5 days and remember it very well. 1997 was the last year of the old 6 team regionals, so it started on Thursday. We dealt with rain Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
We were comfortably beating UNC Greensboro on Thursday night when the game was postponed due to rain. My tickets were down the left field line. I can say that was probably the closest I've ever been to getting struck by lighting. When it hit, everyone in those aluminum bleachers ran for cover. The game was resumed Friday morning and we finished them off.
Later Friday, we won the Oklahoma game. In addition to the triple play, I think that's the game we broke the single season HR record. Of course, we finished that season with 188.
On Saturday morning, we played South Alabama in the "marble" game and were losing by several runs when the rain came again. That was the first game of the Saturday session (3 games). We waited it our several hours before they eventually canceled everything for the day. Sunday morning we resumed the game and couldn't rally. And of course, Sunday night was the classic against Long Beach.
The doubleheader was Monday against South Alabama and we easily won both games. It was dry and hot that day. No more rain.

Believe that 97 regional Oklahoma game was the last around the horn 5-4-3 triple play LSU has turned.
And the dude at first was safe by at least a step

The 90's for baseball were peak Hawthorne. He hadn't gotten worn out yet and was still in his prime. And since there was so little television coverage, the radio was the only way to follow all the games. He and whoever was his sidekick back then provided a lot of great calls and memories.

Yep and in the bottom half of the inning was when they called a balk on Coogan that put the go ahead run at 2nd. That was when Skip got ejected.

I graduated LSU that May, and volunteered on the tarp crew. We worked our tails off that weekend, showing up early to help the groundskeepers get the field ready. I remember trying to push water off the warning track with squeegee - didn’t work well.
Our leader was a guy named Charlie Clary, who was (and still is) the unofficial team chaplain. He “volunteered” us and we got to watch the baseball games during the regional just behind first base dugout. It was awesome.

Was this when he got tossed after the ball got caught in the catcher’s gear?
