I don't really know much about it but all I heard all night on the television was the auburn band at our home field

Oddly, now that the band is paid, they actually play less music than back when they were an all-volunteer band.
The band has been paid for at least 30 years that I know of (help me out here, los angeles tiger). And in the 80s, we didn't have all the first and second down tunes. The drums would play, but not the band. The band still plays way more now than they did when I was in. My lips were usually ground meat by the time the halftime show rolled around anyway, so it didn't matter.

That would be because of the ESPN microphone right in front of their band, which sat at the bottom of the stadium. I'm sure that the LSU band did not have a microphone exetend all the way up to the second level where they sit.

I was in TB in 80-82, and we got paid. I think they called it a service award back then. Got one check at the end of the semester.

And I am also sure that the networks are leery about putting microphones anywhere near our student section due to the clever profanity that seems to come from that area on frequent occasion.

Tiger Band had a $640 stipend back in 1985 when I joined. That was equivalent to one semester of in-state tuition. It had just been raised to that since tuition had been just raised as well.
Linda was always very demanding, mostly as a compensation for her youth and inexperience at the time. I suppose that as she grew into the position, she realized that that style worked for her. I do know that she would also relax more in smaller settings like Basketball Band or on the smaller pep-band trips with people she trusted. As to why she is no longer there, it probably has a lot to do with politics within the School of Music, where she may never have been able to overcome certain people's prejudices about her hiring. I can understand why she left.
Tiger Band has never sounded that great in Tiger Stadium on TV. This is mostly because of where they sit. Their sound can't be picked up on the parabolic mikes that the TV guys have on the sideline, but the visiting band can because they are right down front. In the stadium, they sound fine, but on TV, they will always lose. Having them in the back of the end zone helps the West side hear them better; after all, they are still playing in a certain direction. When they play road games, they are put down on the field and are usually heard well on TV.
The only disappointment I have is in the design of the halftime formations, but I don't get to that many games so I may not be the best judge. The photos I see show a lot more block formations than we used to do under Wickes & Morehouse.
Lastly, the size of Tiger Band is somewhat limited by the number of positions in Pregame. Seven fronts with 32 people in each means that only 224 instrumentalists and drums participate in Pregame. That's larger than when I was in, because another front was added to turn the LSU formation around, but it's still pretty small. If you wanted everyone to march Pregame at least once during a season, you have to have some limits on the number of back-ups you have. After all, you can't expect to have two complete bands, and you certainly don't want to change anything about Pregame. Then we would really hear complaints about Tiger Band.
Hope this helps

Could also be that they actually played while in the stands. TGBFTL has to sit through the myriad advertisements and Piped-In music. Auburn's band played constantly anytime there was a break in the action. I thought they were outstanding this year. They have improved greatly over the past few years.

It's not so much Roy as it is the talent in the band. 5 years ago people in band were in shape and marching was emphasized. Now you have the generation of bandsmen coming up that just played concert band all high school and can't move worth a shite. You just look at appearance of the band 5 years ago vs what it is today. They look terrible and can't march for shite.

It was $640 until 2008. They raised it to $1000 in 2008 as a way to compensate getting crappier seats.

The people in band 5 years ago were also a lot cooler, Ronnie ;)

This is what I meant. It's not really a "stipend" per se any more--these days, it's more like real pay...yet they actually play less than pre-2008. I know they are instructed not to play when there are commercials on the JumboTron, but the band's admins should really fight whoever insists on piping in all this music. It's one thing to pipe in music when the band is walking to and from the field to do its halftime show--obviously, the band can't play then; but it's a whole other thing to pipe in music while the band is already sitting in place in the stands. It seems like opponents' bands play twice as much music as the GBFTL does these days.

You're right that today's teens are different than 5 years ago. Today's teens spend all day indoors on the X-Box, Internet, or watching cable TV. Yes, they get offended if the band director tells them that they actually need to go outside in the hot sun to practice formations for a few hours--I understand that. But if other bands can do it, then LSU's band can do it to.

I agree that the half time performances have declined in quality, but the band seems to be playing at a high level during almost every break...seems to be a significant increase from previous years.
I can't agree with this. I sat closer to the LSU band but clearly heard Auburn's band much louder and much more frequently than I heard TGBFTL throughout the game on Saturday.

A lot of this depends on where you sit. Brass instruments are directional and sitting right next to Tiger Band could mean that Auburn could sound louder if they are aiming directly at you. Also Auburn's band doesn't have someone telling them when to play.
I never liked all the Latin shows even when I was in Tiger Band. I think the quality dipped the first couple years after Moorehouse but it isn't as bad as most of you guys make it out to be.
