Since the NBA draft is today, I was thinking about some LSU players drafted into the NBA and who has been successful. I never understood why Stromile Swift didn't make it in the NBA. He was a freak in college but for some reason wasn't able to stick in the NBA and make a name for himself. Anyone know why?

He was in the NBA for a decade. Not a star, but had a long career averaging 10pts, 5rbs. 1.5blk.

Had an 8 year career. Avg. is 4.8.
I'd say he did okay.

Pau Gasol happened. Turned him into a journeyman.

He caught quite a few bodies in the NBA also.

He just wasn't very good aside from being a great dunker. He was given a lot of chances.
Also the 2000 draft was very very bad so maybe he wasn't really #2 good and unrealistic expectations were put upon him.

NBA players have had a pension plan since 1965. The retirement benefit amount depends on the number of credited seasons and is fully vested after 3 years. After 10 seasons, players earn the maximum benefit payable by law.1 The plan considers age 50 to be standard
retirement age, but as early as age 45 players may begin receiving reduced benefits, reflecting that they will probably receive them for a longer time.

Well if he lasted 10 years he must have been better than "not very good". However, thanks for Vandy's opinion.

Never developed any more skills, relied on freakish athleticism and dunking.

He had a sweet jumper in college.

His skillset did not translate well to the NBA. The NBA did not and does not value defense while at that time the NCAA was playing a much more balanced game. Same thing prevented Tyrus Thomas from having much of a career. Now that the NCAA has crippled defense as well, it is much less likely that a star big in the NCAA will translate so poorly to the NBA.

He could block and dunk...similar to Tyrus Thomas. Not much of a dribbler or shooter, just a powerful force. He was fun to watch though.

quote:completely ignorant statement. Swift and Thomas both had perfect skillmsets for the NBA. They lacked the dedication to develop better offensive skills.

You contradict yourself in a 2 sentence post.

Lacking dedication is a lazy excuse. Stromile had some offensive game coming out of college and that's why he was in the league for 10 years. Tyrus really didn't. The NBA is not the place to develop offensive skills because if you can't score when you get there you aren't going to be taking many shots.

Irregular Heartbeat but my bro is doing well for himself. He has several businesses around Shreveport, he gives back to the community, he's a hero to the younger kids.

Stromile was overrated while at LSU, however he still managed to have a solid NBA career with his skill set.

I am a Grizzlies fan. I watched plenty of Swift back in the day.
