Strengths that turned out to be weaknesses

Every year, the coaches seem to pick a certain position group and rave about how great they are doing before the season. It’s been the wide receivers, the offensive line, the defense and this year it was the quarterback.
It’s almost like the more they pump up a group the worse they will do. Is this just coach speak or is it really a surprise to them too?

They really don't not know until the player does well in the game. Practice is practice. Coaches can only go by what they see in practice. When the lights come on and you have 60000 screaming fans. That can kind of change things. That's why experience is so valuable.

We knew going into the year that there wasn't a clear number 1 WR. But, rather our group would be strong as a whole. We don't have a dude who can really make a wild play other than WW6.
Oline is waaaaay better than last year. Some of the timing issues is just Leavitt making his reads and getting the ball out.
QB: The dude literally looks like he didn't have spring and got us back into the game. He's got to set his feet and make a few throws. Give it time.

Look, I'm not saying Leavitt is terrible and we need to give up on the season. But be clear, while he was rated the best QB available in the portal, that by no means made him the best QB in the country. Several returning QB's were and are better than him.
And anyone who saw that condensed version of all of his plays against Mississippi State last year should have been a bit wary of the reports out of camp, especially with him missing spring ball and coming off an injury.
So I'm not sure what everyone was expecting, but for me it's about what I expected, other than he's a better runner than I thought he would be. And getting ALOT of balls tipped or batted down at the line of scrimmage.

Leavitt has shown 2 consecutive weeks that he is not a good passer. He struggles to read the field and deliver an accurate pass.
I’m simply choosing to believe what he has shown us is true, as of now….
Can he do better? Can he improve?
Yes, I’m sure he can.
Can he do it mid-season? I sure hope so.
Right now, based on his performances he has not been great.

Agreed, but that is the LOWEST of bars.
I have said many times I think The Oline under Kelly was soft as shite. They are better, but they can’t beat D-lines with guys like Echols.

It's almost as though some people set super high expectations without realistically looking at every thing first. Then when the players don't meet them yet, then they're busts or not good or not up to par. Now granted there's nothing wrong with having them, just be realistic about the situation. How about have a wait and see approach and go from there?
This is a QB who hasn't played since last year who's now playing with a new team he didn't have a spring to connect with. He's gotta get better, but so does the oline, receivers etc. These guys gotta gel and it was obvious with things said out of camp that this was the side of the ball that took a little while to get going. Still an issue.
If the schedule was a bit more favorable it would help but still wouldn't tell you much until you're tested. And this is the SEC; you're tested every week. So this is trial by fire. Gotta weather through it.

I’m speaking of the last several years. This year Kiffin pointed out the quarterback was way ahead of where he thought he should have been.
Brian Kelly said the o-line was going to be a strength of the team.
Baseball is also notorious for pumping up the hitting or pitching in different years and then having that aspect of the team be really bad.

Everyone looks at the price tag on the roster and assumes it must be full of studs, but we have virtually nothing to show for the last few recruiting classes. It’s tough to build a true contender that quickly when the foundation of the roster was left in that kind of shape. Kelly should be charged with war crimes for the state he left the talent pool in.
I also don’t think casual fans have fully adjusted to what college football rosters look like now. Outside of a handful of established programs, nobody is just stockpiling elite talent throughout the two-deep anymore. People still look at LSU and assume we’re oozing talent like we once were and should be substantially better than everyone we play.
Long term, I think we’ll be in a much better position than Ole Miss. But right now, that’s a program that has won a lot of games over the last few years, had a stud at QB, and was playing with a ton of emotion Saturday. That wasn’t some talentless team LSU should have just rolled because we spent more money putting the roster together.
The hit rate in the portal also had to be something like 90% for this roster to immediately become what people apparently expected it to be. That’s just not a reasonable expectation.
We need to let the season play out a little before we start freaking out and declaring what this team is or isn’t. But that’s never really been how this fan base operates.

I mean at the end of the day, Leavitt played poorly and still had 221 yards and 2 scores. We still were in a tied game in the 4th quarter despite spotting them 17 points before doing a single thing on offense. There are things that should be fixed, but it's too early to make grand declarations from this game alone. It would be the same as making loud statements about our team after the Clemson game. There are still a lot more opportunities for this team to prove who they are.
