I say you tell Sheppard that his sole assignment is Newton on every play. Hit him when he keeps, hit him when he hands off, hit him when he pitches, hit him when he rolls out, hit him when he drops back (not late, though).
Everyone else has to cover the others.

Make Newton have to look for Sheppard every play, and you'll cut down on his production, confidence and effectiveness.

And Sheppard needs to talk to Cam every time he hits him. "All day, baby. There's nothing but more of this coming." "Are you having fun yet? I sure am!" etc.

Hit him low and wrap up. Don't be a hero. He's bigger than Sheppard so lets get him to the ground.

Its going to be more than one spy IMHO. Newton will see plenty of Kelvin, Baker, and hopefully some Mingo.

I don't like the idea of spying Newton. We can play man coverage with their WRs all night without fear of giving up a big play, unlike the South Carolina, Kentucky, and Arkansas secondaries they've played thus far. The difference in talent between those three and LSU is quite frankly, laughable.

Send the house at Newton on every play. We need 8 men in the box to stop him, not Sheppard... because frankly, Newton is a better athlete than he is.

So they can pull one trap and Newton will be off to the races? Theres a reason they don't blitz Vick in the NFL.

I say Shepp keeps his basic reads with occasional run blitzes, and let Hatcher tee off on Newton(he'll feel that hit).

Folks, I think you have it wrong on how to stop Newton. Piling guys in the box could just play right into his hands. He seems to do very well at buying a little time against a blitz and hitting hot reads. Also, when you pile people up on the line, he could be running into the seconddary, with no one there to do anything about it and DB's running with WR's in man coverage, just because he found a little crease. I think we need to keep our rush lanes very disciplined and play a lot of coverage where we drop 6, 7, or even 8, and use the blitz judiciously. Not the type of D I normally like to play but it looks like the much better way to play this amazing athlete.

Actually I think we have to use zone blitzes against Cam. If you go man and blitz and he gets away he will be running for a long time before he's brought down. If you zone blitz our secondary will be able to keep their eyes on Cam.

I'm just tired of these threads saying to designate one guy to be assigned to newton. It preposterous. That would be ineffective after the first series. You send different players from different angles throughout the game. Keep him guessing who is dropping in to coverage, who is coming after him.

I trust Shepp 100%.

I say do a large % of snaps w/ a spy, and on EVERY down gang tackle the hell out of these SOB's.

Hold Cam up and let others come beat his arse up.

I hope Nevis AKA "the dreads of doom". Destroys him first play of the game and makes cammy cakes scared to run.

Yea zone blitzing will give us the chance to hit him while protecting against him running if he beats the blitz. The only problem is that could leave us open to some nice pass plays. I think a good mix of zone and man blitz could be our best shot. I trust Chavis 100%. Our defense will be prepared.

Agreed. I also think when Auburn sets up in the option read formation with McCaleb, we should play nickel and have Mathieu or Brooks shadow McCaleb, while Big Shep takes Newton.

If you consider Baker will cover the TE, that leaves either safety covering the slot receiver.

But I really don't think Francois is fast enough to hang with McCaleb. Put in the speed package when McCaleb is in the game.

I like the zone blitzing idea. I also like the idea of keeping Cam guessing.

I agree. Chavis does a good job of putting guys in positions to make plays. He'll have the right guys in the right spots.

This is how it needs to be.

I feel like PP will play into the assignment on Newton. Not every down but in some of the formations.
