LSU is a great Gameday experience. From Mike's cage, to Tiger Stadium, to the statues of Tigers all over campus. How cool would it be to have a statue of the original battalion that the Tigers derived thier name from outside of the stadium? I think it would serve as a great history lesson and memorial to our great mascot....that most people probably think is just another Tiger mascot. Just a thought, but think this would be awesome to have!
Terrible idea. And it would send the wrong message , imo.

Yea I like the idea - it might have worked about 50 years ago. No way they're putting it up now.

Not really! You could easily put a small statue on the South side of the stadium, somewhere around the ROTC buidling or the plane with a small plaque that gave the story.
I think its a great idea.

Thanks, but when I saw yours I just thought, "Damn, why couldn't I just say that?"

I think it would be very cool, however I would not recommend it. Unfortunately due to the brainwashing and revisionist history 95% of American students receive on the topic of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln a memorial to the original Fighting Tigers would likely offend some people and the PC police would be out in force. In other words, a memorial such as this would be highly controversial. I would also be concerned about offending any potential recruits. IMO, it's awesome history but I would rather keep it on the low down and leave it for the Louisiana history buffs. People get too emotional about this kind of shite today...see Ole Miss.

This from Wikipedia..........very interesting
"The Tigers’ fame and reputation quickly spread throughout the rest of the Confederacy. Mrs. Sallie Putnam of Richmond, for example, wrote:
The battalion of ‘Tigers’ from New Orleans, commanded by the intrepid Wheat, were, as their name denotes, men of desperate courage but questionable morals. They were well suited to the shock of battle, but wholly unfitted for the more important details of the campaign. Among them were many of lawless character, whose fierce passions were kept in abeyance by the superior discipline of their accomplished commander…. Educated under influences the most pious and refining, he was gentle, easy, grateful and dignified in society; toward men in his command he was kind, but grave and reserved, and exacting in the performance of duty; in battle he was fiery, impetuous and resolute."

Would you be in favor of a statue of William T. Sherman on LSU's campus?

This. Something that we would just think of as a cool statue represents something much deeper and inflammatory to others. Besides, if more people knew the history of the Fighting Tigers, there would probably be more pressure on the school to change the mascot.

Or maybe if we focused more on the Washington Artillery, the ORIGINAL Louisiana Tigers, and less on the Civil War, we could avoid the whole mess.

What if they put a statue up of soldiers that fought in every war that were LSU Alumni. And refer to all of them as the fighting tigers. With a plaque with the story behind it. Also wasn't there a group of Tigers from la in WWII?

I don't think so. Its not like LSU has a student dressed up in full Confederate gear shooting a rifle in the air on the sideline as the mascot. I'm sure many of the past and current LSU players know the history of the Fighting Tigers, and they don't really care.

I kind of like that idea. Currently LSU has memorials to WWI and WWII vets, as well as fallen aviators, but none that I know of for all LSU grad veterans.
The "Flying Tigers" of WWII were led by pioneering aviator and LSU cadet, Claire Chennault.

Hmmm. This has potential.

That would be a lot of statues. A memorial with a plaque some where on campus would be fine enough. Maybe around the Indian mounds?

DUH......we already have a memorial on the parade ground...
Posted on 11/30/11 at 6:38 pm to BabyTac
Yes SIR!!!! As a history major this I believe this would be a great idea. Like the many tiger statues we have outside the stadium, this would be another great one, possibly outside the southendzone (plenty of room) to have a small battalion not so unlike the Korean War memorial in D.C.

You can't change history you bunch of politically correct arse holes. The Fighting Tigers are something to be mighty proud about if you are from Louisiana.
