I posted this in the other thread but didn't get any responses. I'd really like to know if anyone knows the story behind this. I searched google and couldn't find anything.

It appears that Hawthorne re-recorded the play-by-play for this to fix his mistake of claiming Jack Hunt caught the TD pass. I was watching the game on SEC network a few days ago and they showed the clip with Hawthorne's play by play. I told my wife "get ready for Jack Hunt!", yet he never said it. I thought that maybe my memory was fading me or something or maybe he said it later on, after the TD and it was cut off.

I found a clip on youtube that I believe has the same audio that was used in the rebroadcast special on SEC Network. Notice that there is no "Jack Hunt."

This audio appears to be the original with "Jack Hunt!"

They likely just cut out "Jack Hunt" instead of redoing it.

I thought so too, but watch both clips. It is clearly a different audio clip because he doesn't say the same things in both.

It was a pretty rediculous error considering Jack Hunt played D his entire career and that was the most improbable play in LSU history.

By far Jim's most unfathomable mistake ever

I mean, I get that he was excited but how do you confuse a black WR for a white S?

Transcript of the first video I posted:

Hawthorne: "Caught! Caught! Touchdown!!! I do not believe it! The Tigers pull off another miracle! It was Devery Henderson who caught it." You can even hear crowd noise that seems like it was added.

Transcript of the second video:

Hawthorne: "Caught! Caught! Touchdown!!! Jack Hunt! Caught it and scored! The last play of the game I don't believe it! I do not believe it!"

He never mentioned Henderson in the second clip.

Jim screws up a ton, I get it...but that is the most shocking play in LSU's history.

Most announcers have the roster memorized, so in his mind he see an 8, and boom...that's the name he calls. He's far from perfect, and critique him all you want on routine things he misses in situations where he shouldn't, but I can't imagine how crazy that play was watching it live in the stadium.

The one without jack hunt doesn't seem as genuine either. I think they definitely did a redo

It wasn't re-recorded. At least not the clip above. They just took pieces and put it all together. Mainly taking out "Jack Hunt"

He does correct himself in the original, ESPN just cuts it off after the "I do not believe it!" Full transcript is like this:

quote:

Caught! Caught! Touchdown!!! Jack Hunt! Caught it and scored! The last play of the game I don't believe it!I do not believe it! The Tigers pull off another miracle! It was Devery Henderson who caught it.

They just removed the bolded part above

He mistook a black wide receiver wearing number 9 for a white safety who wore number 8.

I know this. He's looking at numbers. Again, in the frenzy he saw an 8 blurted out Jack Hunt and he (or his spotter) corrected him within 10 seconds.

I still have that game on VCR but I've never replayed it. Now if I can only find a way to replay it.

This. It very easily could have been his spotter who made the error in the heat of the moment.

And in many press boxes, the announcers might be so far away from the action that without binoculars it might be hard to tell who is black and who is white. I know the Rantards don't like logic and alternate suggestions that break up their conspiracy theories, but still....
