would you still say that had we hired Jimbo, Herman, Mullen, etc?
In year two? Probably not. Would you?
It might be disappointing, but not expected.
I think most people had 10-2 as the dueling this year.

How much longer are you ok with that being an excuse?
Excuse? I was asked why we shouldn't have expected to win the west this year. I answered. I never gave an opinion of anything else or how long it should take. We, simply, are not a good enough program, right now, to have entered the 2018 season with the expectation to win the west. This whole thread is about whether we over or under achieved this year. This year, none of our fans should have had that expectation.

at what point do the coaches start shouldering blame for us not being good enough?
I mean, it's possible that it's not the coaches' fault if we aren't good enough.
They can only do so much. Can't play the game for them.

see this is where reading comprehension is useful. I've already said there is plenty of blame to spread around as to why we are where we are. That is not absolving anyone of blame.

We finished 3rd in the west behind Bama and A&m at 5-3. We lost a game to A&m that we had no business losing and a game to Florida which we also probably should've won. Theres no reason we shouldn't be sitting at 7-1 right behind bama.

Yes, it's an excuse
This was not a rebuild. Everyone involved has said as much. So how much longer are you ok with that being the excuse?

Who knows? Why are we talking in hypotheticals now?
because if expectations are lower for O than those guys, then the problem becomes rather apparent.

the biggest difference between us and Alabama is oline and defensive front 7 here is just the last 2 recruiting classes (2018-2019)
All per 24/7 sports composite
Recruiting rankings aren't flawless.
But I'll go ahead and destroy the excuses:
1. Everyone remember the Guz Malzahn that we beat last year? Yea, they haven't beaten us in recruiting and they beat Alabama last season.
2. Clemson beat them the year before that. Ofcourse Deshawn was there that year, but let's be real, Clemson beat US a few years before with far inferior talent at the time.
3. Ole Miss beat them in 2015. They legit had a couple of highly ranked WRs, 2 really good Ol, 1 really good LB and DL and the rest of their players were rather mediocre... did i mention their QB was mediocre.
4. Oh that's right, Ole miss beat them again in 2014. As did Ohio State. Ohio State might have been with them talent wise but we all know Ole Miss didn't even have the talent we had.
5. 2013 - Another loss to Auburn since the last time we beat Bama. Oh that's right, we beat Auburn this year. Dare I remind anyone how bad OU dominated them in the Sugar Bowl this year?
6. 2012 - Texas A&M beat them. Someone tell me Texas A&M had more talent than us.
Alabama has lost to Auburn (twice), Clemson, OU, Ohio State and Ole Miss Twice since the last time we beat them and NONE of those teams far surpassed us in overall talent.
You want to know the real difference between us and those teams?
Go ask Gus Malzahn, who was essentially already back on the hotseat this year after beating Bama and UGA just last season.
Go ask Gus Malzahn, who was on the hotseat in 2016 when Miles got fired after 1 down season.
Go ask Stoops who had been at OU for years and knew the best thing was for him to step down so that a younger innovative offensive coach could implement the changes necessary.
Go ask Hugh Freeze to give an honest assessment of our offensive strategy and if it's really even changed.
You all are going in and pulling all this data about Alabama's recruits, yeah so what. Get over it. We've had years where we had similar talent. These other teams I listed beat them without the talent. The bottom line is that we still don't have a modern offensive scheme that helps with the talent gap.
It's not personal. If LSU ends up being mediocre - it's because LSU allowed itself to become mediocre, and being close to being great, or being close to meeting expectations, is not meeting expectations.

Referees aside, some might argue (not me, but some people) that the game vs A&M shouldn't have been close to begin with.
Plenty of folks had us going up there and winning by 30. That's a stark contrast to the close contest it was.
And UF was just an L. There's no way anyone can say that was taken from us.

The results that get him praised and got our old coach fired for starters

Yes. And for this year we underachieved. 10 wins in the regular season should be the bar. Its always been the bar.
You keep saying we arent a good enough program to win the west but we should be atleast competing. The Bama game this year made it look we arent even on the same level as them when thats just not true.

No, it's not. Identifying why we aren't as good as we were 5 years ago is not making an excuse. It's calling a spade a spade.

This was not a rebuild.
Sure it was. We were not elite when Miles left. We were had not competed for the west in 4 seasons when he was fired. It may not have been rebuilding a program from the cellar to the roof top, but to get back to competing for SEC titles, that involved improving from what we'd been the previous 4 seasons. We did not have the same caliber roster and depth when Miles left like he did from 2003-2013. That's just reality.
This is just a really weird argument. I don't think you disagree that we aren't as good as we were when we were competing for SEC titles, yet at the same time you still expected us to win the west this year. Do you realize how backwards that sounds?
Posted on 12/31/18 at 1:35 pm to lsufball19
Ok, you're just content with mediocrity. This is as good as we need to be for you.

We were the 5th most talented team in 2015. The 3rd most in 2016 and the 6th most in 2017. We are an elite level roster. We should be winning 11 games a year. Les Miles was fired because we werent winning enough. Now we have hired Orgeron and hes being praised for doing exactly the same thing we just fired Les Miles for. Underachieving with the talent we have.
