poor solo tackling

lack of gang tackling

miscommunications

open receivers too often in deep out routes

NO penetration

haphazard pass rush

benefited by timely W penalties

benefited by young in experienced QB (a better QB would have had a field day placing balls in receivers hands)

Lack of wanton violence. I want D lineman and D backs who like to inflict pain and dismay

There were missed tackles, but a lot of those were due to player positioning. As they get more confortable with their new roles in the new defense their positioning and gap assignments should improve as well, putting their torsos in better position for form tackles instead of being to the side and having to try an arm tackle.

Couldn't tackle in the 1st qtr and lucky Wisc kept shooting their own feet instead of LSU's heart.
The game could've been over real quick.

Yeah but the defense also has some responsibility in the time they spent on the field. They weren't getting off the field on 3rd down either.

Wisconsin didn't have a single 3 and out all game.

Travonte was very hot or very cold, I saw numerous times were he had just the center and he kicked his arse. Other times the center took him to school or I saw him just standing there or walking.

Key looked good pass rushing and like a hot pile of garbage in coverage.

LBers were meh, coverage was lackluster, run stopping and gap filling was decent.

DBs looked great in man, and lost in zone.

The defense as a whole performed very poor on tackling, but I'm not surprised with the first game and probably lack of live tackling drills due to implementation of the new system.

For being on the field a lot and the first game of a complicated 3-4, overall not bad.

True but we saw improvement from 1st to second half and nice adjustments from Aranda. They will get better, I don't have that much confidence in the offense right now.

Valentine was exhausted and getting blown 7 yards or more off the line nearly every play.

Given it was their first game in a completely new system in a hostile environment getting dominated by TOP with the offense scoring on only 1 of their 12 drives...

I thought they played solid.

Gonna take a few more games before they get comfortable.

There were several plays where you could see what he's capable of. He destroyed the middle of Oline, but like you say, he got blown up some too.
Once he gets conditioned better, he'll be a force if he can just hold his ground on his 'off' plays instead of getting pushed back.

Considering Kevin Steele's defense gave up 19 or more points in 11 of 12 games last year, this is a solid start. There's still plenty of room for improvement. But the defense did their job by giving up only 16 points and scoring 7 points themselves. That SHOULD be enough to win every game on our schedule. But with our offense...

Wisconsin was 3 of 15 on third down. Ironically, the same percentage as LSU in the game.

Things I didn't like:

They need to work on wrapping up the tackle vs just applying the hit.

Tolliver looks worse than Dewayne Thomas in coverage.

Divinity can't cover for shite.

We still suck at punting

Coverage was better though.

Seems we are still trying to corner kick on kickoff

Things I did like:

Second half adjustments from the staff.

Somebody had to have gotten knee deep in their arse because tackling was way better in second half.

LF7 is a bad mofo

Dural looks fully healed

Their WRs had 89 yards receiving and I know right around half of them came on Jackson.

Toliver did get trucked by the QB though.

As an earlier poster mentioned, he was hot and cold. There were a few plays where it looked like he was just standing around, maybe his responsibility on that given play was to hold his position, or maybe it was lack of effort.

However, he did have one play where he really got on my nerves. He turned to the ref to whine about a facemask as the play went right past him. He needs to play to the whistle and worry about calls later.

Defense was about what I expected for the opener with a new coordinator and a new scheme. Not great, but good enough to win. When you hold your opponent to 16 points, your suppose to win. Especially when you put the kind of skill position players on offense that we have.
