hang around some good coaches and see how they handle that type of situation
I just did. Coach handled it as well as could possibly be handled at that point. Sometimes you just don't have some of your guys focused enough to keep their heads in the game in tight situations. That's the only failing of the Florida coaching staff involved in this particular incident. And nobody's perfect at that, either.

ou need to stop saying the 3rd base coach didn't tell him to get back to the bag both before AND after he tagged. He clearly did.

you're going to feel stupid when you see the replay again. The coach clearly says nothing until Katz catches the ball. The coach was too fixated on the ball to notice the runner straggling.

i know the runner screwed up. THat delgado education is really paying off.

Obviously you can't comprehend that I said the runner and the coach both were at fault in this situation. Ive only said it oh,,, 10xs tonight

The fact that no one can even give an ounce of blame to the coach makes that infinitely worse than anything i have ever said.

The coach has to tell the runner to tag on a fly ball with less than 2 outs?

for the 100th time, i blame them both. If the runner messes up, the coach is at fault, especially when there is poor communication there. The coach is there for a reason. In a situation that dire, you do everything in your power to let the player know what to do. even if he knows already.

I posted immaturely before reading the thread, but after reading your posts, I completely agree with you. The coach is there to remind the players of the situation for times like this (when emotions and heat of the moment take over).

The player is still expected to know what to do in that situation and "blame" cannot be put on the coach. There's only so much a coach can do.

THat's part of his job. All this baseball you've played, and a coach has never told you to tag from 3rd?

yea, I would say so, but once the runner returns to the bag, it's pretty much on him at that point. The coach will pick up the ball and yell to go, but it's not really neccesary... unless your Piggot.

Well, I just watched it yet again, and I sure don't feel stupid. The split screen time sync replay does not show the coach's face when the ball is caught, but his feet are clearly already off the ground when the catch is made. Like I said before, he had already yelled at the guy before he started jumping up and down so it's pretty obvious that he definitely said something before the ball was caught.

Seriously.. The 3rd base coach watches the runner go back to 3rd after the fly ball .. Is he really thinking he has to do anything?

Joey, how did the player get so far off the base if the coach was yelling immediately? is he deaf? why didnt he sprint back to the base and tag up?

you dont know what you are watching bub

if the ball was not in Katz's glove, it was a millisecond from being caught. Tomato/tomoto

He did go back to the bag and tag. The kid tagged up, but left the damn bag for no reason before it was caught. Then once it was caught he had to go back to the bag AGAIN and by then the ball was in the infield.

Joey is saying the coach yelled immediately after he left the bag. Which he didn't.

I haven't seen the replay, so I may learn something. But, what I saw was a coach celebrating, just like the senior. The kid screwed up. He is a great player, but he lost his mind for a second. So did Sully.

He did. I'm talking about when he drifted off the base the second time. And I have no idea why/how he got so far down the baseline again while the coach was clearly telling him to come back, and I'm sure the same thing was running through the coach's mind while he was telling him to come back. I figure that frustration had something to do with why he starting jumping up and down screaming at the guy when he didn't come back.

Well, the whole play from the time the guy left the bag the second time to when the ball was caught was less than a second, and the camera panning over the coach's face in that interval clearly shows his mouth moving. So I don't know if you somehow heard him saying, "DRIFT! WANDER OFF!", but under the circumstances and judging by his reaction to the player not coming back, it seemed obvious to me that he was saying something to the effect of "TAG!" or "WAIT!" or "COME BACK!" (or perhaps a somewhat more profane version of the above, depending on how his frustration tolerance is).

Javi would be catching hell. We got 11 hits so couldn't complain about the hitting so the coach at third base would catch hell and that would have be Javi
