Les had enough chips built up by then that he could afford to do " whats right for the program."

Well, their final 2 seasons they were 11-2 and 13-1; that sounds pretty damn solid to me.

They just weren't ready in 2008. Hatch was the starter despite having a rag arm, because Lee absolutely couldn't read a defense. He could make the throws, but threw a ton of pick-6's because of that.
JJ was supposed to redshirt, he wasn't anywhere near ready as a freshman. He did lead the team to wins in the final game and bowl, and had plenty of success (W-L) afterwards.

Those guys did ok under strict orders not to risk interceptions their last 2 years; imagine if they'd been groomed properly and then allowed to run a full offense instead of being tossed to the wolves.
