We played good sometimes great defense in year one under House.
What changed?

Serious question.

BJ ojulari and a better DL overall made that defense work. Ojulari would chase the QB from the pocket and then Perkins would run them down.

So he didn't have the players?

Last year was one of the worse defenses I ever seen in my 42 years watching LSU football.

We were getting gashed in the run too.

2022 had good returning talent and pretty much hit on all the transfer guys (Greg Brooks, Wingo, JBC, Garner), whereas this past year’s defensive transfers had a bunch of misses/ meh types (Duce, Denver, Ovie, Speights).

Correct, he didn't have the players last yr. Last yrs db's were worse then pelinis.. and penn and speights might be worst 2 lb combo we ever had. We lost wingo week 1 ish with injury for the yr. Mason wasn't healthy til like week 10.

And yes having 4 nfl 4 and 5th yr sr db's who all started games or seasons at cb and s each, helps your defense dramatically. Converse, brooks, ward, garner, and then foucha off the bench in 4th or 5th yr. Ojulari was maybe the best de in the sec, roy was solid and better then anyone last yr , maybe Jefferson if Jefferson was a starter all yr. And baskerville was 20 times better then penn and speights.

We beat bama that yr and penn had like 13 +8 yd plays he was solely responsible for against bama. So yes, ALOT of coaching starts with having talent.

House lost an ability to improve with what he had. He honestly had shite end of the stick, because what he was given at cb and s, at lsu, is embaressing. To compound it we had guys hurt or suspended every other game or for the season. Players lost confidence in him and seems that's why he was let go. Things like not spying bama qb with Perkins, hardly ever blitzing or knowing what effective blitz packages to mold with best 8 guys up front you have... seals it

Your whole response is great but this part is scary:

Most of these guys are coming back and that's not a positive.

Sure, guys like Toviano and Stamps were true freshman. You want to see them keep playing and developing to know what we have there.

But guys like Burns and Sage - it's gonna be really disappointing if they're our starters again this year. Go back and watch the tape of any game last year. They're consistently the worst pieces in the puzzle.

We're way passed the stage of "seeing what they got." If Burns, Sage, and Penn see a lot of time this year, I think we're in trouble.

I have no answer to the OP's question.

We were bad in every way on D last year: fundamentals, talent, scheme, effort. Watching it all play out was painful. And that it was paired with arguably the best offense in CFB adds to my frustration.

House took the fall. Maybe he deserved it. IDK, But a HC with as much experience as CBK (I think that was a factor in why he was hired and why he was given the contract he was), should not have let it get to that.

- Hit & Miss in the portal

Mekhi Garner and Bernard-converse >>> Denver Harris, Duce Chestnut, Zy Alexander

- D-Line coach had a medical emergency pre-season & we had no legit replacement. Was that House’s call or BK’s?

How can you improve if you don't have the players?
You laid out how much better the players were in 22 than 23.

So how was he supposed to improve?

Or he's not great at working with what he has. So the answer is to give him better talent every year than everyone else, and he will be successful? Any great coach can man-manage, understand what he has, and be relatively successful. You won't be great year after year but won't be bottom of the barrel. So, did LSU have worse talent than every other team that was ranked ahead of us defensively?

Ridiculous. We didn't have to have a top-ranked defense. He couldn't scheme, develop, adjust, or teach what he had to be at least an average defense, considering the offense we had. Basically, he was shite.

Stop blaming freshmen sage or any others bc of him being shite. Who knows what they will look like with a competent coach and scheme? PP7 would have looked like shite in that scheme when the QB has 15 seconds to throw the ball,

There were games, or at least subsets of the defense you can improve.

Bama game: could have spied running qb with perkins... we maybe win that game since his legs beat us.

Daronte jones : showed how aggresive blitz packages could impact a game, against Bryce young and bama, and the final 3-4, games of the year. The entirety of the season before, we ran a 4-3 and only brought 4 guys. Switched to a 3-4 and brought pressure from all over. Not saying house should have done something as drastic as a scheme change. But things below could have helped big 1 off games, or won us moments in games (ole miss drive bringing no pressure)

Perkins spying bama qb
Blitz packages with press man- how many 3rd and 16 we give up with our db 20 yds off the player.
Playing toviano week 3-4, vs waiting until bama game and injury forces it. He was better then 90+% of what played all year aa a lost true fr.
Starting speights over weeks when weeks was best true linebacker on the team last yr

More experienced and better players.

Bernard Converse started at Oklahoma St for four years. Both Arkansas DBs started multiple years. Garner started multiple years at UL and the UL team was good because it was loaded with underrated talent that Napier pulled together. Look at some of the guys on his last team that went to other schools when he left.

Experienced LB who was previously coached by Baker. A DL coached by Cain. A former freshman All American that came from Mizzu. A stud in Ojulari, and a decent DE in Gaye.

Lets not forget the hot rod freshman phenom in Perkins.

Despite playing one more game than their 2023 counterpart, LSU's 2022 rush defense gave up 6 less TDs.

It may shock you, but Blake Baker doesn’t have the players this year. Defense will be rough again, and it won’t be scheme related

Kentucky people warned us about House. He's more of a NFL coach.

I also think BK hamstrung House a bit last year. BK knew how potent the offense would be so he thought that if the defense played more of a safe, low aggression style with the inexperienced DBs, they could slow down the other team’s offense enough to allow ours to outscore them. Unfortunately, our DBs were terrible at playing soft zone and no one really understood the scheme which allowed the exact opposite to happen than what BK wanted. We would’ve been better off just playing aggressive and getting burned time to time but also making big plays.
