The best way to keep a defense honest, so they don't load the box and blitz, is the short passing game. Bama dared us to do it last year and in 2011 BCS title game. Screens, tight ends, slants. Quick passes. I hear they are working hard at improving the short game. Touch passed. It's where Harris has struggled. That creates the balance and makes the offense efficient. If Harris get that down, watch out.

Not gonna happen. Leslie does not want to do that and will not magically start doing it this year. Expect more of the same old crap.

This.

Imagine what LF could do if the defense can't tell if the FB and TE is setting a block or going out for a 5 yard pass. Instead of stacking the box, they'd have to stay honest.

I do think you'll see more of the short game this year because I think we'll see more of the two back set. Guice is going to be far ahead of where he was last year in terms of knowing the playbook and blocking. You should see more of he and fournette in the backfield together. If you focus on one, the other will beat you. That's a deadly combination. Add in dupre and Dural on the outside and that's just ridiculous.

A short passing game doesn't unstack the box.

It can if coupled with a few deep passes. An O needs to both stretch the D and have an option of attacking the middle of field.

Nope. Its on BH. If he can pass with touch and not too hard and high we can have a short passing game and attack the middle of the field as well. If he does not show improvement, starting in practice, we will have an offense similar to last year. It is simple as that.

A diverse passing game yes.

The point of the air-coryell is to keep defenses honest with a consitent vertical threat and strong run game

A short and medium passing game will help with this to prevent them from focusing on one thing

But it's not as simple as "a short passing game"

Water is also wet.

We havent had much of a short passing game since, well, ever. Even with Mettenberger. I doubt we start now unfortunately.

By short game your thought should include 10 to 15 yard routes, the passing game has to include all options on the table.

The whole idea of getting teams to not stack the box is to make them defend the whole field side line to side line and line of scrimmage to goal line.

A good defense has the players to defend quick passes, without the treat of the medium and long routes the defensive backs will sit on their heals and play the run and dump passes.

It's funny how this has become a mantra on here, because the deep passing game is actually the best way to keep a team from loading the box. It's the bomb and passes just over the linebackers reach that are most effective.

Obviously screens and quick slants are very effective at punishing teams that blitz linebackers, but if you're trying to keep safeties out of the box it's the deep middle.

This. The short passes would only invite the safeties up even more. What the OP should have said is that there needs to be more calls to attack the intermediate routes. (10-15 yards downfield) Intermediate & deep routes are the way to get safeties to stay high & not come down into the box. Short passes & any type of screen are blitz beaters, designed to take advantage of an extra rusher or two going after the QB instead of them being in coverage.

If an offense can consistently attack down the seams & the area above the MLB/below FS, then the chances are really good that they can limit a defense's ability to blitz their A gaps along with forcing the defense to keep their safeties back.

I cannot recall LSU running anything like this in the last 3 years. Alabama ran it at least 4 times in this game alone, and also called it with regularity in their other games. if Lane Kiffin can figure out how to incorporate short passing into his gameplan, surely Cam Cameron can as well.

I don't think short passes are necessarily the key. We simply have to be willing to exploit the weakness in whatever defense is presented.

Our problem is that we are gonna run/throw what is called regardless of the defense. Les believes that if you execute, then no one can stop you.

What I have noticed over the last few seasons is that LSU absolutely REFUSES to attack the middle of the field, even when the safeties are up. Les would rather check down to a run between the guard and tackle than do play-action to a TE or slot receiver over the middle.
