re: Short List of LSU Men's Basketball Coaching Candidates

Gregg Marshall
Tim Floyd
Kermit Davis
Steve Alford
Jamie Dixon
Those should be the only realistic candidates with head coaching experience, unless I missed someone. I think Bruce Pearl SHOULD be on the list, but it's not likely with his recruiting situation (though I think it would be worth it).
And Dixon is only on the list because of the thread on here.
Smart isn't coming here. Pastner isn't coming here. Buzz Williams isn't coming here. Prohm doesn't have enough head coaching experience in my opinion, even if he does have strong Louisiana ties. Plus, he went to Alabama.
I think the guys I listed (especially the first three) are the only realistic shots who would also very likely take the job if it were offered to them. And I think they would all be good hires.
Chris Collins (Duke associate head coach) is a name I'm interested in. He is Coach K's top assistant, and is very involved in recruiting and media relations. Plus, Alleva has plenty of ties to Duke, as we all know. Obviously, being a Duke alum, he'd be a likely candidate to return to Duke as Coach K's successor should he have success here, or at any other school as a head coach. However, if a guy like that can give us 7 or 8 good years before he left for another program, I'd be perfectly fine with that.
Of course, that's just assuming he leaves Duke. He is really close with Coach K and some believe he is somewhat of a "coach in waiting" over there. However, it can't hurt for the guy to leave for a few years to gain some head coaching experience before they hand over one of the most prestigious jobs in college sports to him. That is usually the normal process for a coach working his way up the chain.
I know hiring Collins would contradict my statement about getting a guy with head coaching experience, but I think Collins has Prohm in the credentials department.

Well then you're probably stupid.

What about Johnny Jones? He's the most realistic candidate in my mind.

I want a dirty recruiter.....frick it
Posted on 4/6/12 at 8:49 pm to BilJ
the only worry about a dirty recruiter is drawing attention to the school as a whole and fricking up football for cheating too like USC.
Posted on 4/6/12 at 8:49 pm to BilJ
I'm not saying I want one, but I certainly wouldn't say we shouldn't get a great coach because they are a dirty recruiter. That's stupid.

How? He's never been a head coach and being an assistant who hangs off Coach K's tit doesn't carry much weight to me. So far only one of them has been a success.

I just don't think that will ever happen, considering the circumstances.
He's not THAT good of a coach either, to be honest.

boots garland played a pretty good basketball coach in that pistol pete movie

playing a high school coach in a shitty movie is second only to teaching a bunch of rich white kids to run 4.9 forties in my book

Do I have to put a happy face after my post to let you know I was joking.

The circumstances are no mas. He has head coaching experience, Texas and Louisiana recruiting ties, and most importantly direct ties to the program. I think people who over look him as being heavily considered by the AD are being short sighted.

I know Coach K's assistants haven't exactly set the world on fire once they become head coaches elsewhere, but I can't remember a guy under Coach K who is as involved as Collins. He does halftime interviews for him, for Christ's sake.
I'd hire a guy who has played and worked under Coach K for 15+ years before I hired a guy who had success at a mid-major school in his first year in part from a roster that was just way more talented than the other OVC teams.
I'm not trying to say he's a bad coach. I'm just telling you how I feel.

I have a really bad feeling it's going to be him and I will be very disappointed. If he is the hire, why didn't they just hire him in 2008?

That's because Coach K is a dick who thinks he's above talking to the sideline girls.
I don't trust Prohm much either because he took over a ready made team but I don't trust any Coach K assistants.

I love Johnny Jones. Anyone on here who posts in the basketball threads will tell you that I'm very high on him. He has everything we need in a coach. Although he's not an amazing X and O coach, he makes up for it in other areas.
However, I don't know if it's realistic for him to come here. That's it. I'm not so sure if the circumstances are no more. I feel like if Johnny Jones was ever seriously considered to be the head coach at LSU, he already would be.
Maybe I'm wrong. I wouldn't mind it at all.

I'd like a different choice, as well, but JJ is the easiest hire to think of. He meets all the requirements.

My post wasn't directed to you, it was about Buzz Williams.

This is exactly how I feel.
He was everything Trent Johnson wasn't.
Makes me think he won't get the job if he doesn't have it already.

That's my concern: that they are looking for the easiest hire instead of the right one. Maybe they turn out to be the same thing. Who knows?
Why wasn't he the right hire back in 2008, then?
