I THINK we will have JJ for a few years and then CG takes over. I am sure RS will play and may even start a few games for whatever reason but I think CG is going to be something special.
Now before anyone jumps all over me for this, I already know that I 'don't know'. This is just my gut feeling which is all any of us have to go on.

Really? Just like Pat White's career ended in college? Or was he the #44 pick of the 2009 NFL Draft? Shep has been descibed as such: "Imagine Pat White...with Speed"
+1
From what i've seen, Shep is faster than white...

How long do you guys think it'll be before we see Shep as our full time QB?
I don't think Shep will be a full time QB. He'll be used more for his speed then anything else. Doesn't matter though, he could be a very dangerous weapon on offense. We can use him in the WR position or in the QB position.

Glenn Guilbeau: Shepard is the guy to lead LSU's flock
Midway through the 2008 LSU quarterback trilogy, someone very close to the team was asked which of the three on the team would be the quarterback of the future.
“The quarterback of the future may not be here yet,” was the answer.
The future gets here early next month. His name is Russell Shepard, and his grades and work ethic are so good that he enrolls in January.
Russell Shepard is Ryan Perrilloux without the baggage or the counterfeit. He is not going to say that he’s going to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 and win the Heisman in his freshman year. Though Shepard did throw for just short of 2,000 yards and did run for just short of 2,000 yards last season at Cypress Ridge High in Houston.
Shepard’s not going to say he’s better than the quarterbacks already at LSU, though he probably already is, and he’s not going to get stuffed into a locker by a senior at his first practice.
In fact, Shepard has already been humble enough to tell LSU coaches before this season that if he does not win the starting job next season that he can play another position like receiver or defensive back or kick returner until he becomes the starting quarterback.
Had Perrilloux straightened out and played at LSU in 2008, the Tigers could be 10-2 right now even with that horrid defense. With Shepard next season, LSU will be back in that nine- or 10-win plateau. He’s that good, and he’s got his head on straight.
Yes, he will be just a true freshman next fall, but he should benefit greatly from spring drills, and the position will be as open as it has ever been.
Jarrett Lee, who will be a sophomore, started eight games in the 2008 season, but he digressed tremendously. Even though some of the blame for that rests with head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, it will be very difficult for those two coaches to go into the 2009 season with Lee as their starter considering the baggage of interceptions from 2008. And there could have been more.
Andrew Hatch, who will be a junior, started LSU’s first three games and proved to be a good field general and solid runner. He is smart and has savvy, but his overall talent level is just not there. His best role may be as a calming backup for a young starter.
True freshman Jordan Jefferson, who started the Arkansas game and will start against Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, has all the tools and could well be the starter to open the 2009 season. He is not as crafty a runner or scrambler as Shepard, but he is a dual threat, which is what Crowton craves.
Since Jefferson and Shepard are the same type quarterbacks, LSU’s offense will be geared toward them. There is also commitment Chris Garrett of Tupelo, Miss. A more traditional drop-back quarterback, Garrett will also enroll next month. You can't ever have too many quarterbacks, and Garrett will get his shot.
Due to Hatch’s injury that sidelined him for the last five games, Lee’s struggles and Jefferson’s lack of playing time until very late in the season, the competition will start in the spring virtually even.
Since Shepard and Jefferson are true dual threats, they have the advantage.
Because even if they struggle with their passing game, they can always run and they can always be effective on designed running plays. Shepard, like Perrilloux, can make something out of nothing, which is what the LSU quarterback position was in 2008.
Sooner or later, Shepard will pass everyone else, and LSU will have its first four-year starter at quarterback since Tommy Hodson from 1986-89.

Ole Glenn really has it all figured out huh???

Part of me says Shep is such a talent that he can be the QB. The other part of me says there is a reason the other schools didnt project him as a QB.

I wanna see RS in some live game time action vs like caliber players before I start saying how good or what is or isnt gonna do.
Thats just me though.
THere is much more to leading an offense at QB than being able to run fast, jump high, and throw far.
Im not a HYPE person... prove it.

I agree with you BT. With that being said...I think we also need to see alot more of JJ. Our most experienced QB is JL, and that sucks for us. It'll be interesting to see what Miles does this year. Garrett was also mentioned a bunch under this topic. Guess we have to see how it all plays out. Either way...
Posted on 7/6/09 at 5:21 pm to aroussel3Tigers
That Guilbeau article was before the bowl game. If he's still saying the same now, then he's just an idiot star-gazer.
Posted on 7/6/09 at 5:26 pm to aroussel3Tigers
The only thing that sucks for us is that we only have one guy that has any meaningful PT...I know JJ has two starts, but Im with you on needing to see more,,, Im not sold on the guy as many here are.
JL, as painful at times as it was last season, Is a yr older and most importantly he's hopefully a yr wiser.
If and when he gets his opp this yr I would expect to see a diff and better qb.

I think it depends on JJ's success this year. At the very latest, 2011 Shepard takes the reigns.

Did Crowton OC Oregon's offense that season they had dennis dixon and were a walk to the national championship til he got injured?
if so we should run that offense with Sheppard
if so we should run that offense with Sheppard

He's gonna be the Friday night pitcher and bat cleanup for the baseball team, run the point in basketball, anchor the 4x100m relay, and QB LSU to the BCSNCG....... Jesus Christ, let the kid take a snap before you crown him. 4 year starter, 2 Heismans......

Who had the better freshman year, Herb Tyler or JJ?

The only thing that is certain about this situation right now is that LSU is much stronger at the QB position than it has been in a few years. It's mostly potential right now but believe me when I say the quarterback situation is turning into a coaches dream and the defensive coordinators of the opposing teams worse nightmare. I have never seen better young talent at LSU ever. Coach Miles and his staff has brought in talent that the rest of the country can only dream of except for maybe Florida and USC. It could come down to coaching. And I like our chances.

RS is very very good, but he is no Ryan Perrilloux. Ryan was oozing with once in a lifetime talent. I am still upset about all that has happened...oh well.
