I have a dumb question I always wondered about. Could Shaq pay his tuition and room and board, etc. and then he just walks on instead of using up a scholarship?

I feel Shaq can convince him especially with the talent we have coming in. Now as a father he may chose not which I respect but he could push hard

If he wanted his son to win a championship he could say, “use the extra scholarship on a shooting guard”. Maybe he wouldn’t do this but I could see a rich superstar who was confident they would get their playing time wanting to build an all star team.

Common sense tells me the NCAA wouldn’t allow it but the NCAA doesn’t do common sense. They have rules without exceptions and if they allow Walk ons for mediocre players I don’t know how they change them for Shaq’s Kid. But I am sure I am missing something.

That’s disrespectful to a 5* and his father who still donates and avidly supports the school

Absolutely a parent can choose to pay his child’s way to college and save a scholarship.

There have been many examples of a coach’s son being a “walk-on”

Those coaches sons weren’t top 30 players. Also, if we aren’t guaranteed to get him, why would we use that pitch when everyone else is offering a full ride?

Shaq publicly said he should go to UK. No joke. That was before he committed to Ariz though.

That was before Will Wade was able to show just how much he can do at LSU.

I was just saying it is allowed. Not that it should be done. Poster asked if that was within NCAA rules.

If the two open scholarships are currently intended for transfer seniors or JUCO players no doubt they would use it for a highly rated high school player.

The NCAA cannot make a subjective decision of which player qualifies for " walkon status. " Regardless of who the parent is they can fund their child's education.

Certainly out of respect the university would discuss the situation with Shaq and all parties would be clear on whether they are offering and on waht terms. Shaq isn't dumb. He knows the scholarship issues and if Shareef wants to attend LSU he would likely offer to have him be awalkon if he had no objection.

Bottom line if Shareef wants to be at LSU and LSU wants him it will happen one way or another. If not he will likely be at UCLA or Kentucky.
