We are currently under 70 scholarship players, and with a 25 signing per class cap, how do we get back to a full 85? We will still lose more after the season, so how do we ever get back to 85 if we cant sign more than 25 per class

There is no way to do it that doesn't involve recruiting guys that aren't good enough to leave school early. And that's not really a route we want to go.

What is hurting us from getting numbers back up is that transfers count as initial counters for some reason and fall into the 25 man annual limit.

Would be nice if the NCAA would temporarily increase the max limit that could be signed in one class. I'm sure some other schools are being affected by this due to covid as well.

If Saban starts to have this issue , they will then change the rule.

The only way to do it now is time. Everyone(JUCO, HS kids, Transfers) count against the 25 you can take a year.

One thing not being discussed is that this is a free year where no one uses eligibility. Schools not in LSU's position are going to struggle to get down to the 85.

I don’t know the rules on this, but what stops a school from signing 25, talking another 15 into being a Walk On just to hand them a scholarship later on?

This year doesnt count against eligibility, but a 2021 class is still coming in, so theory is try to get as many draft eligible and seniors to come back for another season next year - basically try and convince any of these guys to come back for 2021 that you can:

SR. Glen Logan
SR. Neil Farrell Jr.
SR. Austin Deculus
SR. Liam Shanahan
SR. Travez Moore
SR. Andre Anthony
SR. Tory Carter
SR. Ray Thornton
SR. Zach von Rosenberg
SR. Cameron Lewis
SR. Jabril Cox
SR. Racey McMath
SR. Jontre Kirklin
SR. Jacoby Stevens

Then your draft eligible guys like Brennan, Marshall, Clark, Ingram, new transfer from Nicholls etc....

IF you can have only say 15 guys leave from those currently playing, add 25 in recruiting, that's +10 right there and gets you to 80-ish players. Not saying that will exactly happen, but what they're probably shooting for.

I think the rule is they have to be in school 3 (maybe only 2?) years before giving them a scholarship to where it doesnt count against the 25, but only the 85. This is why you typically see seniors or juniors get scholarships as previous walk ons and pretty much almost never a freshman or sophomore.

So you cant just take someone as a walk on and immediately give them a scholarship as quickly as you can and expect it not to count to the 25, it will.

I'd imagine they'll try to convince some seniors to come back.

Farrell, Deculus, Shanahan, Moore, Anthony, Carter, Thornton, Lewis, and Kirklin are all guys who could at least entertain the idea.

It's a tough sell, I know.

That makes sense. Figured there was a reason it didn’t happen like this but I don’t look too much into Recruiting rules

I believe if they have been on the roster and participating with the team (starting your eligibility clock) for at least one year they can receive a scholarship without it counting towards the 25.

convince guys to not leave early and recruit guys that don't get kicked off the team or transfer.

Anybody who has been in residence for at least an academic year can receive a scholarship and not count against the 25. Your eligibility clock starts no later than when you attend class while enrolled full time whether you participate in athletics or not.

Don't know what they will do with the 85 post this year, but my guess is that they will except anyone who actually uses the extra year. For example, someone playing their 4th year this year wouldn't count in 21 if they stayed. A 3rd year guy this year wouldn't count in 22 and so forth.

Funny you have this issue in football, but in baseball star players get .001% of a scholarship and with roster limits players are constantly getting processed.

To win you need the early opt outs
You can't have many misses going forward in your recruiting classes
Playing time ought to help in recruiting as well
The extra year will help because it will keep players around an extra year - for example seniors like Tory Carter and the transfer Darren Evans can stay another year.
Liam Shanahan can stay another year
You need to find some really good walk ons you can get on campus and get them schollies as well
