who was the better forward for LSU?

Ben Simmons was a better basketball player than anyone at LSU not named Pistol, Shaq, or Chris Jackson.
That will trigger some people but it’s the truth.

Well, Macklin’s an all-American, and his jersey is retired, so...
ETA: Ben was an all-American, too? I honestly didn’t know.
Still, Macklin.

quote:maybe, but Simmons didn’t lead his team to anything significant, didnt seem to care, and skipped town the instant he could.

You’ll forgive me if i don’t care.

Simmons is more talented, but that wasn't the question. The answer is Macklin.

Macklin accomplishmed more at LSU. Simmons is the more talented player. They are both great and were both great at LSU. I don’t really see the point of this thread other than giving dumb LSU fans another opportunity to show their arse regarding Ben Simmons.

thanks for recognizing the nuance of the question...the answer may still be debatable though, although I vote for Macklin too

Rudy Macklin played four years and gave his heart and soul for LSU basketball.
Led them to a Final Four. Had a nice, but not really significant, career in the NBA.
I buried a 20 footer over him at the old health club on Monterrey ca. 1985-6. That is my athletic highlight.
Ben Simmons is a phenomenal talent who gave the very least he could and jumped ship the minute he could. May he have a long, injury free career. I hope he uses some of his NBA fortune for good works. But other than that, frick him and the horse he rode out on.

I am really grateful to have been a student during the Shaq Mahmoud Abdul Rauf (FIFY)...part of LSU's golden years for basketball.

If you asked Rudy M. that question, he wouldn't hesitate to tell you..."Simmons".

Rudy had 32 rebounds against Tulane in his first game of his career. That is the second most rebounds by a freshman in D1 history.
Robert Parish had 33 for Centenary against Southern Miss.
And Rudy was only 6-6. I give the nod to Rudy.

Not Simmons fault, that’s on JJ

didnt seem to care
That’s fair, but I think that was a toxic environment once things started going south. The team was in the gutter because JJ, other players were jealous of BS and his success. I think he checked out much like everyone else did.

skipped town the instant he could.
Anyone who wouldn’t go be the first overall pick as soon as they are able to would be making an awful life decision
